If you're not careful, this whole Vivek Ramaswamy political ad scandal will make you crazy the more you think about it. Because the candidate Mr. Ramaswamy isn't accused of sexual abuse. None of his staffers or his family or his top donors are accused of sexual abuse. There is zero correlation between his campaign and the sexual abuse that occurred. Think about that. No, this whole thing is because Mr. Ramaswamy's team thought it'd be a great idea to run an ad featuring the mother of his opponent, Amy Acton, and apparently no one did sufficient vetting or seem to have cared about what they found. At minimum, his team didn't think to ask: "Huh... so, you, uh, mentioned in passing you haven't seen your daughter in 48 years. That would have put her at age 12, right? That's kinda odd. Uh... what happened?" And then the info comes out that her estranged mother lost custody of 12-year-old Ms. Acton and her younger brother in 1978 because her husband--their stepfather--sexually abused her daughter. And the stepfather fled the state that year and several warrants (plural) were out for his arrest over the sexual abuse. And then it's revealed the stepfather was previously prosecuted for raping his own daughter. His team looked at all this and you'd think they'd be like: "Well... shit. That's a ton of legal evidence that her mother is a raging sociopath. We really didn't think this one through. This is bad. Let's figure out how to salvage this disaster." But no! Mr. Ramaswamy decides to spend all week defending the ad of his opponent's mother who hasn't had contact with his opponent in 50 years since she lost custody over sexual abuse. And then esterday, Mike DeWine, the Republican Gov. of Ohio, calls on Mr. Ramaswamy to remove the ad and said "it's deeply troubling." So, you gotta figure Mr. Ramaswamy is finally gonna pull the plug on this disastrous and bizarre dumpster fire. But no! Mr. Ramaswamy sees that the ad has vocal support from deeply unpopular Donald Trump, noted rapist and alleged pedophile, and thinks to himself: "Yes, Rapey Don is right. I should keep up the child sexual abuse ad." And he puts $4M behind the ad buys, even though, by this point, the dark and disgusting context of the ad and condemnations of it by the Republican Governor are blanketing social media and local news stations across Ohio. Here we are, 11 days out, and you gotta figure Mr. Ramaswamy knows his campaign is now on life support and the brain trust that was responsible for this ad in the first place is probably now advising him that he can make it through the next 11 days by just waiting it all out, admitting nothing, apologizing for nothing, withdrawing nothing. Because surely 11 days is more than enough time for this whole thing to cool down -- you know, the whole denying and downplaying of documented child sexual abuse, while the top Republican in your state is publicly begging you to stop acting like a psychopath. It's all a lot to take in.

SNL FOUND ANOTHER WAY TO MAKE A PILLOW FUNNY. BY SELLING IT LIKE IT COULD CHANGE YOUR LIFE. “SHOP TV: PILLOW” uses the familiar language of television shopping: enthusiastic salesmanship, big promises and the suggestion that one ordinary product can solve a problem you didn't even know you had. That's a very recognizable format. The product is simple. The presentation is anything but. And that's where the comedy starts. Television shopping depends on confidence. The presenter has to make an ordinary object feel like an extraordinary opportunity. SNL takes that confidence and turns it into the joke. Because once a sales pitch becomes too enthusiastic, the audience starts wondering whether the product is actually useful, or whether the performance is doing all the work.

Spielberg’s early career is fascinating ground to cover. Did you know he almost made an R-rated nerds vs jocks middle school comedy? I’m joined by @maxevry to talk about that, aliens, and his great new book Stranded on Earth in the latest episode of The Spiel.
New episode alert! @maxevry has a new book coming out called Stranded On Earth that focuses on how the unmade project Night Skies evolved into Gremlins and E.T. We talk about that and dive into the early Spielberg years where his ultimate legacy was shaped.

Truly, @ConanOBrien is a damn genius, and a genuinely kind human. Interviewed him a few times, but when I was a MUCH younger writer in NYC, I accidentally stole his coffee at Starbucks (Co-Nan, Aar-on: It was early in the a.m.). He was so funny & cool about it. Hope he forgave me

This is a great scene. I am shocked I never saw it before.
The infamous banned Halloween cold open from The Office that you won’t find on @peacock or @netflix. Michael Scott really had no boundaries.

Just really morally repugnant behavior from Vivek Ramaswamy to use the sexual abuse his opponent Amy Acton suffered as a child as fodder to deride her. It’s offensive and disgusting.
Amy Acton's brother slams Vivek Ramaswamy featuring her estranged mother in a campaign ad. "After he was arrested and Amy and I were removed from their custody, our birth mother stayed married to Amy’s rapist until he died. This desperate, disgusting attack reveals exactly who Vivek Ramaswamy is at his core – a pathetic excuse for a man who is willing to hurt anyone as long as it gets him what he wants."

Jeff absolutely believed the PGF was authentic until his death. He and I discussed it several times after his interviews with the documentary crew, and a friend discussed it with him during his final weeks in hospice. Any suggestion that he changed his mind is misleading spin.
Did Meldrum Dump Patty? That’s the claim some have floated after Marq Evans and Tamir Ardon showed him their mystery footage in November 2024 — that he knew the truth and no longer treated the Patterson-Gimlin Film as genuine. The later record doesn’t support it. In the April 2025 Backcountry Manifesto interview — roughly five months after that session — Meldrum walks through the biomechanics of the Bluff Creek trackway and the film itself with the same analytical posture he had used for years. He refers to the subject as “Patty” without qualification. “…I’m quite confident in what I’ve described to you because you can watch it take place in the foot of Patty on the film. You can see her heel come up first and almost reach verticality. And if it was a stiff artificial foot, a rigid prosthetic, then the rest of her foot, given the orientation of the heel, would have to stick eight inches straight into the ground. But it’s not, you know. It’s just bent. It’s flexed, and that’s what we call the mid-tarsal break. … And that is the most fundamental distinction between a Sasquatch footprint and the human footprint.” That is not the language of someone who had abandoned the film or Patty herself. It is the language of someone still treating it as a usable record of real anatomy and gait. The mid-tarsal break he points to on screen is the same feature he had long argued was difficult to reconcile with a costume or a stiff artificial foot. Whatever Meldrum’s private reaction was in the moment — and the reports of discomfort about how the material was presented to him are relevant context — the subsequent public record does not support the claim that he gave up on the Patterson-Gimlin Film. He continued to analyze Patty as a genuine primate subject. The charge that he “knew the truth” and walked away from the film is difficult to square with the interview he gave afterward.
