The changes we make to mitigate our risk of spreading #COVID19 can also bring about incredibly positive changes to the cultures of our schools. Whatever comes next for public education doesn't have to be a return to 'normal'. It can be something better than before.

You know that nagging feeling you have? Those troubling questions: "...is this really what's best for kids?" "...couldn't we prepare in a way that wasn't so scary?" "I'm a teacher, not a cop..." Those quiet thoughts just got a bit louder... #schoolsafety knpr.org/npr/2020-02/2-big-t…

Asking (reasonable, respectful) questions about the way we currently do #schoolsafety work is the first step to an educator-led, all-hazards, developmentally-appropriate, proactive way to keep schools safe. And we have got to get there. Our kids are depending on it

it's not just the educators who are scared. we are teaching our children to be afraid...in a place where they assume, pr used, the they are safe. The emotional impact on our kids, even the impact on their learning, is IMMENSE.
Post 1of2 According to @dropeik the odds of a student being killed in a school shooting are only 1 in 614 million, yet safety training focuses only on an active shooter event, leaving educators scared, frustrated, or with critical knowledge gaps.
