We must congratulate universities who, this summer, had closed-book exams under invigilated and timed conditions. Students who performed well under these conditions have every reason to feel superior to those who were permitted open book exams sat at home with generous timing.

‘I am frequently emailed by teachers who say there has been a huge increase in the number of young ppl who ask not to do things because they are anxious – and these requests are being granted. The concern is this is setting young ppl up to fail, I agree’ theguardian.com/commentisfre…

An absolutely full bingo card of every progressive cliche about education: 21st century skills, tick; preparing children for worlds we can’t imagine, tick; exams crush children’s creativity, tick. A thorough demonstration of how unfamiliarity with evidence informed education, leads us inwards, to the same old dogma. Which is ironic.
In this week's column I argue that our education system is not only failing to prepare children for the massive and rapid shifts - environmental, technological, social - they are likely to face, but is actively de-preparing them. Plus short thread. theguardian.com/commentisfre…

The eradication of discipline in schools is making the teaching profession unsustainable. Teachers aren't quitting because of "culture wars!" on the internet. They're quitting because terrible behavior is making their jobs miserable every single day. fordhaminstitute.org/nationa…

The problem we have is not kids regurgitating facts. It's policymakers regurgitating fads. I wrote a book about how this sloppy thinking has held back ed tech for decades. Read it if you would like some evidence about how tech might improve education. daisychristodoulou.com/book/…

Third, collapsing all of the aims of education into "what is demanded by employers". Of course, employment matters, but it doesn't & shouldn't dictate everything. A lot of facts you learn at school won't directly help you get a job, but they will help you understand the world.

Second, the article proposes a faddish & PR-driven alternative to exams - the "Learnability Quotient". It's an unvalidated online quiz developed by Manpower Group to harvest emails. Oh, and it'll identify your learning style. And it was all the rage at Davos!🤦

First, memorisation is criticised & set up in opposition to understanding. But we know from all the latest research that understanding *depends* on memory - because our limited working memories need help from our vast long-term memories. More here daisychristodoulou.com/book/…

The priorities for the DfE should be: 1 FE colleges, finding teachers for FE, developing great vocational courses 2 improving outcomes in secondary schools for the bottom third. There are hundreds of other things to be done, but the enemy is loss of focus. #forgottenthird
