THIS IS WHAT DEMOCRACY LOOKS LIKE? BUFFALO, YOU SHOULD BE DISGUSTED! Americans, take a good, hard look at these photographs. Then ask yourselves how much longer the mainstream media expects intelligent people to swallow this garbage. They called them “No Kings” rallies. They promoted voting rights, democracy, civic participation, and protecting America. THEN EXPLAIN THESE SIGNS! “JUST DIE ALREADY!” “WISH THE KID IN BUTLER DIDN’T MISS.” Those are actual messages photographed at these demonstrations. One openly expresses regret that the assassination attempt against Donald Trump failed. And we’re supposed to applaud this as some magnificent celebration of American democracy? ARE YOU PEOPLE SERIOUS? Imagine a conservative demonstration featuring signs wishing that an attacker had successfully assassinated Barack Obama or Joe Biden. Would the headlines celebrate voter participation? Would journalists describe the gathering with such congenial language? Or would those signs become the central story? We all know that question deserves an answer. Here’s what makes this especially reprehensible. The same political movement that lectures Americans about tolerance, decency, democracy, and dangerous rhetoric now has demonstrators publicly displaying precisely the kind of political hatred it claims to oppose. The hypocrisy is almost ineffable. And where is the journalistic curiosity? WGRZ promoted the anticipated nonpartisan voter-registration message. The Buffalo News subsequently ran the headline, “We all have a say: Rallies promote voting.” Well, apparently some people have more to say than others, including expressing disappointment that a former president survived an assassination attempt. THAT IS NEWSWORTHY, WHETHER THE MEDIA LIKES IT OR NOT! I’m not condemning every person who attended those rallies. I’m condemning the individuals carrying those signs, the political culture that tolerates such rhetoric, and any journalism that overlooks it while presenting a sanitized account of the event. You don’t get to preach democracy while celebrating an attempt to permanently silence your political opposition. You don’t get to demand civility while displaying contempt for another human being’s life. And you certainly don’t get to lecture the rest of America about dangerous rhetoric while pretending these photographs don’t exist. Buffalo deserves journalism that scrutinizes political extremism regardless of whose campaign signs surround it. THESE PHOTOGRAPHS SPEAK LOUDER THAN THE HEADLINES.
