Yesterday was a big win for America’s health. The following doctors and nurses won their elections: Senate • Dr. Annie Andrews (MD, pediatrician) - South Carolina • Dr. Abdul El-Sayed (MD, epidemiologist & former Detroit health director) - Michigan Governor • Dr. Amy Acton (MD, MPH, former Ohio health director) - won Ohio House • Dr. Richard Pan (MD, MPH, pediatrician) - California • Dr. Adam Hamawy (MD, surgeon) - New Jersey • Dr. John Cowan (MD, neurosurgeon) - Georgia • Mitchell Berman (RN, ER nurse) - Wisconsin • Kristina Knickerbocker (APRN-CNP, neuro-oncology nurse practitioner & Air Force veteran) - Ohio Plus reelected nurses Lauren Underwood (IL) and Sheri Biggs (SC), and several physician incumbents who held their seats. The world needs to start paying attention. We will break 15,000 deaths by the new year. And just because Ebola isn’t going to become a pandemic doesn’t mean it is not a global health security threat as well as a humanitarian disaster.
