a common thing i'll hear is people saying "i want to be an X" be it founder, content creator, whatever. but when you ask them what they actually want to make they don't know. people love the idea of identifying with a label much more than the actual activity itself

I was presented with this argument a few years ago and found it somewhat convincing. I’m not well-read on consciousness and AI consciousness, but I find it suspicious that functionalists often dismiss arguments like this because they don’t want to discount AI consciousness on silicon.
