I pulled this old zoot suit out of my closet in support of my good friend Richard Reyes, AKA @panchoclaus. For 45 years, he’s brought Christmas to the barrio and joy to countless kids. Happy Birthday Richard!

Forging history. Dean Senfronia Thompson is the daughter of a maid and the granddaughter of a sharecropper. She grew up paying a poll tax for the right to vote. She became a public school teacher, and then a Houston attorney. She was first elected to the Texas House in 1972, and today she is the Dean of the House and the longest-serving woman and African American legislator in Texas history. Over the years, she has written landmark legislation that first gave Texans spousal support after divorce, toughened penalties for hate crimes, banned racial profiling, increased the minimum wage, and created drug courts so people get treatment and a second chance. She is a proven leader who puts people over party. That is why we call her “the conscience of the House.” Madam Speaker, we're ready to work. #TxLege

I am deeply saddened by the passing of my longtime friend Ben Reyes. A towering figure in Houston’s Latino community, Ben helped open doors to political power and economic opportunity for people too often excluded from both, inspiring generations to see a place for themselves in shaping our city’s future. His public life also included serious missteps for which he was held accountable, and his story carries both those difficult chapters and his lasting contributions to Houston. I extend my deepest condolences to the Reyes family and all who loved him. Today, I join them in mourning a friend and community pioneer.
Ben Reyes, a trailblazing Houston political figure who served as a state lawmaker and then as Houston's first Latino city council member before being sent to prison on bribery charges, has died at age 79. bit.ly/4A9ZHHk

In the 1973 Texas Legislature, three powerhouses from Houston sworn in together as freshman representatives. The last of them may become the Texas House speaker in 2027. #txlege (L-R Ben Reyes, Senfronia Thompson, Mickey Leland) 📸HT @CarolforTexas

Voters demanded an end to the divisive social issues that have dominated the #txlege. The Senate must come together to deliver results that make a difference in Texans' daily lives.

We mourn the passing of Ben Reyes this morning. Ben was elected to the Texas House of Representatives in 1972 and elected to the Houston City Council in 1979. Throughout his career, Ben fought tirelessly for political and economic opportunities for the Latino community. Ben was a key player in bringing about single-member districts for the Houston City Council. As a member of the Houston City Council, he successfully advocated for Latino business owners and professionals’ involvement in both the public and private sectors. Ben’s unwavering efforts on behalf of our community cemented his legacy as a pioneer, trailblazer and unrelenting public servant.

Thanks to yesterday’s historic win, one thing that would be great to see this upcoming #txlege session is Sen. @CarolforTexas filing and bringing back her online voter registration bill for Texas. Let’s make this a reality.

Harmeet was instrumental in Trump’s mid-decade redistricting. On Tuesday Democrats won 4 out of the 5 seats they tried to gerrymander. Thanks for playing, Harmeet.
