Treasury just withdrew crypto surveillance rule proposals long opposed by Coin Center. The “unhosted wallet” and mixer rules would have expanded reporting into our pockets. coincenter.org/treasury-just…

Love my team; love my job. In a room full of noise, we’ll keep fighting for the values that brought us here in the first place: freedom, privacy, and self-sovereignty.
Coin Center in Politico Decoded this morning. Crypto is working its way into Wall Street. DC is embracing centralized issuers using blockchains. What’s lost in all this is the cypherpunk, private, self-sovereign original purpose of the technology. That’s what we fight for.

Replying to @coincenter
@coincenter appreciates the opportunity to respond to @USTreasury's GENIUS Act Regulations on Payment Stablecoin Issuance, Offer, and Sale. As it stands, the proposed rule could treat independent developers, validators, and liquidity providers as having participated in the unlawful issuance of a payment stablecoin for merely conducting routine activities, thereby exposing them to criminal liability. In response, we urge Treasury to clarify in proposed § 1523.2(d)(2) and (3) that a person is treated as participating in unlawful issuance only when the person acts pursuant to an agreement with the issuer and for the purpose of materially facilitating key steps in the issuance or the issuer's initial distribution. These clarifications would preserve Treasury’s ability to reach deliberate assistance in unlawful issuance while ensuring that independent software development, network operation, transaction validation, and liquidity provision do not, standing alone, create criminal liability. "The problem I have with new rules is that there can always be newer rules. Listen to what we’re saying when we tell a worried developer: “Don’t worry. We have a pretty good relationship with the Administration.” That’s not fucking good enough. They should be able to ask what the law is and get a straight answer they can rely on for years." - @valkenburgh

"Coin Center wasn’t founded to collect favorable exercises of government discretion. We’re here to establish legal limits that survive the officials who happen to agree with us. Our mission was never simply to get the government to say yes to crypto. Washington increasingly knows how to say yes to crypto when it can find an issuer, a compliance department, a transparent ledger, and a freeze function." We have stablecoin legislation. Great. Stablecoins are useful products issued by financial institutions. But we still need to protect the right to build things that don’t require financial institutions. Will the law tolerate software nobody controls, communications nobody intermediates, computer programs you run yourself, and transactions nobody has unilateral authority to reverse? Those are the harder questions."

The government doesn't need a warrant to get detailed information on your movements, habits, friends, and even your beliefs. It can buy all of the digital breadcrumbs you've left on the internet and use AI to correlate it into a detailed dossier. p2p.coincenter.org/p/the-fed…

The Feds are buying your data. AI is making it more useful than ever. Our ad based internet has resulted in a rich market for user data that has ultimately created a massive loophole in 4th Amendment protections from undue government surveillance. The government can just buy our data on the open market. And the ease with which that loophole is exploited is only going to accelerate thanks to sophisticated AI sifting through all that sensitive information. p2p.coincenter.org/p/the-fed…

If AI continues to be described with human characteristics, specifically by the ones building it, and those characterizations worm their way into policymaking, then we are likely to see misguided regulations in the near future. p2p.coincenter.org/p/am-i-a-…

Typically when we think of sanctions we think of shadowy oligarchs and hidden terror groups. With these particular sanctions, we get to see what happens when a professionally established person living in a developed city is suddenly cut off from the U.S. financial/tech system. The stories from those sanctioned paint a scary picture. p2p.coincenter.org/p/it-equa…
