“The community here was the biggest surprise. People often assume community colleges are places where students leave right after class, but Dallas College is full of connection, involvement and interesting people.” — Michael, Dallas College Engineering student. Read about how Michael is continuing a legacy that started with her parents meeting at Richland years ago.   What led you to where you are today at Dallas College?  “I started at UTD, and despite working hard there, I eventually found my way to Dallas College. It felt like the right place to be, especially after I learned my parents met at the ESOL lab just above the STEM Center where I spend most of my time. That made my experience more personal because I feel like I’m continuing a family legacy while pursuing something I’m passionate about.” Where did your interest in engineering come from?   “It started in high school through our robotics club. I visited the club as a photography student but found myself spending more time around the robots than taking pictures."  Did you find community when you arrived here?  "I did, immediately! Richland students are incredibly welcoming and genuine, and that sense of connection helped me get involved and eventually join Student Government. There, I gained confidence and found opportunities to advocate for students, specifically students with disabilities. I had evidence of what I was capable of, especially when working alongside other motivated students.” As a Latina woman pursuing engineering, what does that journey mean to you?  “I pursue my degree for women like me and for the statistics I want to overcome. Getting my degree would mean I get the chance to find a career I’m passionate about and build a life I want. In doing that, I know I am part of what slowly changes those statistics.” What impact do you hope to make through your work?  “I’m drawn to thoughtful design that makes using machinery or a system much safer by considering and valuing the person using it. Recently, I started a position at Richland’s STEM Center, where I’ve had the opportunity to help others discover what inspires them and move toward their goals. Come visit us in W159!”

“I’m grateful. Dallas College has been part of my life for more than two decades, first as a student and now as an employee. The institution helped shape my future, and I’ve had the privilege of helping students pursue their own goals in return." - Erbin Ayala, Dallas College alumni and success coach. Tell us your story. “My family moved from California to Mesquite in the early 2000s. The move gave me a fresh start, and I experienced a complete academic turnaround. Eastfield became my home campus, and in many ways, it still feels like home. I graduated during the 2008 recession. I found myself searching for direction. Then I became an instructor for youth camps. Working with young people opened my eyes to education in a way I had never considered before. That experience planted a seed. “Today, I’m a success coach at Dallas College, helping students navigate their educational and career pathways. I’ve come full circle.” Where do you find the motivation to keep going? “A lot of that comes from my family. My parents immigrated to the United States after fleeing the civil war in El Salvador. They taught me the value of hard work from an early age, and that work ethic has stayed with me throughout my life." What brings you the most fulfillment? “Much of my work involves helping nontraditional students navigate their educational journey and helping people realize their potential. You don’t go into higher education because you’re chasing financial success. You do it because you want to make a difference. For me, it’s about giving back." How has your experience as a Dallas College student influenced the way you approach your work today? “I think a lot about the people who helped me when I was a student. As a success coach, you’re not just helping an individual student. You’re helping a family. You’re helping future generations. The impact of education extends far beyond the person sitting across from you. That’s something I never lose sight of.”

“You’re always a student of something. Every stage of life, you're always learning from situations. Let that drive you.” - Mason, Engineering student Dallas College. Read his inspiring story below: You’re very involved with TRIO, a student support service offered at colleges to provide students with academic help and assistance, and it seems like you found a home here. What do you think contributed to that? "What I think contributed to it was really finding myself. TRIO provides all the tools and support necessary to succeed at the college level, all for free! Getting into college made me think that it was all proper and professional. TRIO completely changed that for me. They taught me that college isn't just a place to find what you want to do, but to learn how to express yourself in a world that you couldn't before. TRIO was just a catalyst for the self-confidence I have now. The more that I grew into my college time with them, the more I grew into myself and the person I am today.” What happened in high school that made you say, 'Yeah, I want to go for engineering'? How did you get to that point? "So, in my high school, we were put into pathways based on our interests. There was engineering, health science, aerospace. There were a lot of different branches, but I was put into aviation. My friends and I had worked at an airport as well. It was Dallas Executive Airport. I got an internship over there, and it was really cool work, really awesome seeing everything. Then I volunteered at the airport as well because they had these air shows and workshops tailored to kids. They had these veteran events as well. But I got the interest in it from the internship and growing up in that environment in high school." What legacy do you want to leave behind? "What I'd want to leave behind are the connections. To make other people around me better because it's worked for my workplace. It's like my presence is enough to be in that — it just feels like nurturing or caring. So, just to bring that kind of effect wherever I am and just for it to be there, I think that's the legacy I want." #WeAreDallasCollege

“Being a student at Dallas College has taught me that we are meant to speak for each other and not against each other." - Khadeejah Ahmed Art student Khadeejah was honored at the Aug. 11 Dallas College Board of Trustees meeting for her art piece, "I Must Tell Your Story," after having recently placed second overall at the International League for Innovation competition. “I get emotional talking about what Dallas College has meant to me. My professors really transformed my view of myself. My mother brought me here as a kid. I was inspired here as a young man. I went away, became a teacher, and then Dallas College hired me to come back. Now I’m transforming lives myself.” - Dallas College alumni and professor, Sean Mixon. Learn more about his story below. What started your journey with Dallas College? “My story begins with my mother’s dream to better the lives of her three boys. She chose to improve her life by going to Mountain View, and at the time, she enrolled me in Kiddy College there. I was 5 or 6 years old, walking these wide hallways and looking at the planes hanging from the ceiling. There was something about being in that environment of higher learning that planted a spirit of education in me." How did Dallas College change the way you see yourself? “I had never considered myself to be smart. Then Dr. Hickey handed me a paper from my speech class and told me I was ranked No. 1. Experiences like that transformed me. My professors poured into me and gave me hope.” What led you from being a student to becoming a professor? “I started out wanting to be a motivational speaker. Then I discovered philosophy at UTA and fell in love with it. Eventually, I realized, ‘I may need to get a graduate degree and a doctorate so I can do this during the day and get paid for it.’ “Before becoming a professor, I spent nine years teaching in public schools. My final year at Nimitz was especially meaningful. Many of my students faced poverty, homelessness, family violence and other challenges. Some were reading at a fourth-grade level while in 10th grade. “When they received their state test results and saw that they had passed — some for the first time — it was incredible. We had the best results they had seen in years.” Why did you want to return to Dallas College? “I fell in love with education here, and I wanted to give back to the community that gave so much to me. Now, I’ve even had the opportunity to teach some of the same students I taught in eighth grade — only now they’re adults sitting in my college classroom.”

Preparing students for school means supporting the whole family, and our Pleasant Grove Center showed what that can look like at scale. Dallas College rounded out our back-to-school event series by filling the center with resources, services and opportunities for families preparing for the school year. With support from @TheConcilio, National Alliance for Hispanic Health and other sponsors, students received new backpacks and school supplies while families accessed food boxes, immunizations, dental and asthma screenings, wellness workshops and bike repair. The breadth of support allowed families to take care of several back-to-school needs in one welcoming place. It also gave young people a chance to experience a college environment and see Dallas College as part of their community and future. Our centers place Dallas College in the heart of the communities we serve, making support and opportunity easier to access close to home. This neighborhood presence allows us to meet immediate needs while building connections families can return to as their goals and lives change.

Dallas College understands the communities we serve, and we know the value of showing up for families in ways that extend beyond the classroom. Back-to-school events at our West Dallas and Irving centers brought families together with resources to help them prepare for the school year. Brother Bill’s Helping Hand joined us in West Dallas, while All Things Made New, Chase Bank and the North Texas Food Bank partnered with us in Irving. Through these long-standing community relationships, we helped families check important items off their back-to-school lists while connecting them with resources that can support them throughout the year. These events also give young people a chance to experience a college environment and begin to see higher education as part of their future. Dallas College is proud to strengthen the communities we serve by putting our centers and trusted relationships to work for local families. Through these efforts, we are building connections that can grow with them through every stage of life.
