Caltech and Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute have built X1, a robot duo that pairs a modified Unitree G1 humanoid with M4, a Caltech robot that can both fly and drive. The humanoid carries M4 like a backpack through buildings, then bends forward to launch it, and M4 switches between flying and driving to reach a simulated emergency.

Researchers from Norway’s MAREANO seabed-mapping program were guiding a remotely operated vehicle along the Arctic seafloor when they spotted an unusual cluster of tube worms rising from the sediment. When they scooped a sample, a black cloud of bacterial activity erupted, revealing bones, teeth, and a rich community of worms below; an accidentally discovered whale fall. Whale falls occur when a whale’s carcass sinks to the ocean floor after death, creating a temporary but vital oasis of nutrients for deep-sea ecosystems. They help sequester carbon and cycle essential elements, and the bones can sink beneath sediment and become invisible from above. The discovery highlights the risk posed by deep-sea mining, which could unknowingly bulldoze through buried whale falls and the specialized communities that depend on them.

Two studies published in Nature Physics have shed new light on the mystery of high-temperature superconductivity in copper-oxide ceramics called cuprates. The first, led by Canada’s INRS, used laser pulses to temporarily disrupt superconductivity in a cuprate crystal and tracked electron energy changes over trillionths of a second. When superconductivity was disrupted, a pseudogap state appeared. When superconductivity returned, it disappeared; suggesting the two states compete for control of the material’s electrons rather than the pseudogap facilitating superconductivity as some theories proposed. The second study, led by Radboud University and the University of Bristol, demonstrated that spin fluctuations of electrons in the material play a critical role in creating the conditions for superconductivity at higher temperatures. Together, the findings advance understanding of why cuprates can conduct electricity without resistance at temperatures far warmer than conventional superconductors, though room-temperature superconductivity remains out of reach.

China has inflated its first 10,000-tonne-class air-dome grain silo in Changchun, Jilin, the first time state grain reserve group Sinograin has taken the design to the cold northeast. Each dome starts as an inflated membrane that becomes the mould for sprayed foam insulation and a reinforced concrete shell, and four are planned at the site. It scales up the 9,000-tonne domes in Changsha, Hunan, which took in their first grain in July 2026.
