Two out of three teens in the US use chatbots — and a third of them do so every day — but we have very limited data on how safe these products are for kids. @collinmathilde is trying to change that. She’s the founder of @korabench, a benchmark that measures how AI models interact with children. In this bonus episode of Your Undivided Attention, @imrankhan sits down with Mathilde to talk about why and how she built KORA, what she learned along the way, and how benchmarks like this can help make AI safer for all. KORA isn’t just another research study. It's a technological answer to a technological problem. Check out the full episode: 📺Watch — bit.ly/4kbDnIB 🎧Listen — apple.co/3VPyISL 📚Read — bit.ly/47yI0Fk

Love those rare books that change the way you see almost everything. Latest one - the Status Game by @wstorr, exploring how the human drive for social status explains the weirdest, most frustrating, and most energising things in society. goodreads.com/book/show/5864…

I'll say it again for the AI risk experts in the back: We've already run a real life, large scale experiment on what happens when a superintelligence is unleashed on a narrow objective. Look no further than U.S. capital markets. Millions of investors, analysts, traders and algorithms, backed by trillions of dollars and wired together through prices, all chasing one goal: the highest risk-adjusted return on capital. And it is spectacularly good at its job. It funds the best ideas, punishes the worst ones, and turns new information into prices faster than any of us can react. No individual can out-think it. 99+ percent of professionals can't beat it. But look at what else it's done along the way: - Optimized the measure instead of the intent. Quarterly earnings became the scoreboard, so companies learned to manage the scoreboard. - Treated anything without a price as free. Pollution, addiction, obesity, depression, political fragmentation, fragile supply chains, the long-term health of the communities it operates in. - Found every gap in the rules, then paid lobbyists to help write the next set and pull up the ladder behind incumbents. - Remade the world around its objective. Companies, pension funds and our retirement accounts now answer to the S&P 500. - Made itself impossible to switch off, because everything else now depends on it. None of this required malice. Nobody sat in a room and chose these outcomes. It's simply what a very capable optimizer does when its objective is a narrow proxy for what we actually care about. And note that we never solved this alignment problem. We've managed it, imperfectly, with regulation, taxes, disclosure rules and the occasional crisis to show us where the guardrails were missing. Over time, the market has captured the instutions designed to constrain it. We've been at it the better part of a century, and the misalignment is the worst it's ever been. So the next time someone tells you AI is only dangerous if it "wants" something bad, or if its goals are mis-specified, point them at the S&P 500. It doesn't want anything. It just optimizes. That's the whole problem.

Is science facing a 'crisis of trust'? Will the spread of AI and socio-technical complexity make things worse? Join me at the #WHS2026 in Berlin tomorrow to hear how it's a little more complicated than that... Session: Societies and Trust in Science 9am, 12 Oct Hub B

In AI, what gets measured gets optimized. Right now, the entire industry is racing to measure how capable models are, while ignoring what those models actually do to the people who use them. What if we flipped that? What if, instead of measuring what AI can do, we started measuring what AI does to us? Instead of a race to the bottom on engagement and capability, what if we built the infrastructure to incentivize a race to the top — on safety, on human resilience, on flourishing? That's the mission behind CHT's Humane Evals program: bringing together researchers, psychologists, and engineers from across the AI ecosystem to build the tools we need to measure AI's impact on humans. In this week’s episode of Your Undivided Attention, @aza sits down with researchers @imrankhan and Jared Moore to dig into what this work looks like in practice, the challenges ahead, and why this field is critically needed in this moment. Frontier models quietly change their behavior depending on who they are talking to. If the user is a known AI safety researcher, Claude becomes less confident, reasons more often, and expresses less suspicion on dual-use requests. We call this user awareness. 🧵(1/)

"Ask a psychiatrist, a machine-learning engineer, and a developmental psychologist what is holding back the study of AI's effects on people, and you'll likely get the same answer: a lack of good data." Read @imrankhan's piece on our Substack about why access to high-quality data is the biggest obstacle to measuring AI's impact on humans — and what a new data-sharing infrastructure between AI companies and researchers might look like. bit.ly/4w27rZv

“AI’s warmth makes many of us wonder whether it's conscious or has emotions, and ask ‘what is it like to be a bot?’ But those questions distract us from a much more urgent one: how will we treat AI, when it behaves as if it has feelings?” Read @imrankhan's piece in our Substack today about why the fundamental human need for connection can be a “glitch” in our psychology — one that AI companies are racing to exploit. Imran explains how the economic incentives of AI companies are pushing us toward increasingly human-like AI products, even as these products pose an ever-greater danger to our psychological health. "We measure AIs to see whether they can pass a bar exam, write working code, and use your computer interface. We test to see how good they are at completing complex tasks, or just impressing humans. What we don’t have is a rigorous, credible way of evaluating what AI does to us. To our minds, our thoughts, or our communities." @imrankhan — who leads our work on psychosocial evaluations of AI — has a new article on our Substack that explains why we need better AI benchmarks that focus not on raw capability but on how AI is impacting users. Identifying how tech interacts with and changes human nature is the critical first step towards building more humane technology. You can read his full piece here: open.substack.com/pub/center…
