"You can’t have an internal and external focus at the same time, so by having that narrow-external focus on the pebble, you turn off all thoughts, which means you turn off negative or mechanical thoughts."
What should pitchers actually be thinking about on the mound?
In his latest Inside Pitch column, Geoff Miller breaks down the mental side of pitching, from avoiding mechanical thoughts to using the "pebble breath" technique to reset after adversity and stay focused on competing.

We track everything in baseball—except one of the most important things.
“Momentum is built through the plays most people overlook.”
It’s not always the highlight plays.
It’s running hard. Taking the extra 90. Getting the leadoff out. Finishing innings.
The teams that understand momentum don’t wait for it—they create it.
Brandon Hyman talks The Momentum Game: abca.org/magazine/2026-2-Mar…
In the biggest moments, talent isn’t enough...you need something to lean on.
“For ballplayers, one way to find lasting success is to cultivate an anchor.”
When everything speeds up, the best players slow it down with routine, breath, and control of the moment.
That’s not just baseball. That’s life.

“Everything rises and falls with leadership.”

We don’t just coach the game…we coach the player.
