This past week, our team traveled to Accra, Ghana for the Africa Internet Governance Forum (#AfIGF).
There, we had conversations about meaningful connectivity, community-centered solutions, and protecting digital infrastructure. We connected with community members, partners, and our local chapter. We discussed funding opportunities, best practices, and challenges.
Thank you to everyone who attended our sessions and engaged with us this week. Together, we can build an Internet for everyone—in Africa and beyond.🌍

As Europe seeks to update its telecommunications rules through the Digital Networks Act, we must preserve net neutrality and protect the open Internet from policies that impose network usage fees.

Young people in Madagascar are connecting to the world in powerful new ways, but often without the skills to navigate digital risks safely.
In 2024, in partnership with local nonprofits and the national cybercrime police, @ISOC_Madagascar launched its Digital Safety and Responsible Online Behavior Workshop, attracting 138 students and young professionals.
Participants took part in expert-led discussions and group activities covering best practices. Topics included verifying information, addressing cyberbullying, securing accounts, and identifying scams. Trainers also covered digital law and where people can report cybercrimes.
As more of the population goes online, digital threats continue to grow—and so does the importance of online safety education. Learn more about our work to advance a safer Internet: internetsociety.org/blog/202…

This week, our team traveled to Barcelona to attend #MozFest. There, we discussed building an Internet that serves the public interest. We brought together stakeholders to develop advocacy strategies for defending encryption. And we connected with our community of chapter members and grantees who are working around the world to help people safely access the opportunities the Internet offers.
Thanks to everyone who chatted with us, those who attended our sessions, and the whole MozFest community. Until next time!
Encryption is an essential technology that protects private communications, financial transactions, sensitive information, and more. Yet it continues to face growing pressure and policies that seek to weaken it.
On 21 October, the Global Encryption Day Summit 2026 brought together experts and advocates from around the world to discuss #encryption and why protecting it protects people everywhere.
Over five sessions, the summit explored policy challenges facing encryption, emerging threats to privacy tools, public attitudes towards encryption, and preparations for a post-quantum future. That’s a wrap on #ICANN87! It was an intense week, with our team focused on security and advocacy topics.
We engaged with government representatives about the upcoming ITU Plenipotentiary and the Internet Governance Forum (IGF). We worked with the technical community on DNS security and resilience issues, as well as the multilingual Internet. And we engaged with Internet Society chapter leaders, organization members, and our partners in the greater Internet ecosystem on how we act together to build a stronger Internet for everyone.
Looking forward to the actions that come out of this week with the ICANN community. Until next time!👋
“We reject the idea that safety and privacy are in competition or somehow in tension with each other. We believe that secure and private communications actually keep people safe, and putting that at the forefront of the conversation around safety is absolutely critical.”
Our president and CEO, Sally Wentworth, sat down with the president and CEO of @CenDemTech, Alexandra Givens, to discuss the challenges facing the open Internet, the future of technology governance, and more. Listen to the full episode ⬇️ cdt.org/insights/talking-tec…
Every day, more than 80,000 independent networks exchange traffic to keep the Internet running. They largely do this by paying for IP transit to reach the rest of the Internet, or by #peering directly with one another, often through an Internet exchange point (#IXP). A new study shows that:
👉 Peering is dramatically cheaper than transit—everywhere.
👉 Cost savings from peering ripple out into real market benefits.
👉 Developing and moderately regulated markets gain the most from peering.
