Southeast Asia remains a hotspot for transnational repression, accounting for half of the 126 physical incidents recorded by Freedom House in 2025.
Recent cases, including the disappearance of a Laotian asylum seeker in Thailand and the forced return of Vietnamese activists from Cambodia, underscore the dangers facing dissidents in exile.
Our latest #TNRWatch examines these cases and calls for stronger international action to protect those targeted.

Luis Manuel is an artist - jailed by the Cuban regime for simply writing a song. Hear his powerful words to a room full of UN Ambassadors below.
Surreal scene yesterday @UN as regime in Havana harassed brave Cuban truth tellers and @USAmbUN. Just the latest reminder of the acto de repudio that have long been used against Cubans who speak their minds. #transnationalrepression

Living rent free in the Cuban Foreign Minister’s head. The truth hurts @BrunoRguezP and freed Cuban political prisoners & corruption experts will keep telling Hard Truths at the UN. Cuba Libre

Watch as a mob of Cuba regime “diplomats” at the UN accost former political prisoners, calling them “terrorists” and “liars” while filming them.
These survivors of Havana’s prisons and forced labor are telling the hard truths the world needs to hear! 🇨🇺 Cuba Libre!

"El 11 de julio de 2021 me regresaron a prisión y se reinició la peor etapa, el peor calvario que he vivido en toda mi vida", expresó José Daniel Ferrer en la ONU.
Today @UN diplomats witnessed the dying gasps of the dictatorial regime in Havana as Cuba's delegation harassed former political prisoners. Thanks to @USAmbUN for his leadership exposing the regime's lies and advocating for the Cuban people at this critical moment.
Today at @USUN alongside USAmbUN, Freedom House's CEO @jamiemfly was honored to have the opportunity to highlight the decades of repression in Cuba. The world must not overlook the regime's denial of fundamental freedoms. Cubans deserve a voice in their country's future.
I was proud to stand today @UN with Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara and José Daniel Ferrer, two courageous former political prisoners from Cuba. Their stories are a powerful reminder of the many others who remain unjustly detained by the Cuban regime. #FreeThemAll

Following months of dialogue, representatives of political groups with different, and sometimes deeply opposing, views came together to sign a document on fundamental human rights.
This is not a political alliance. It is not an agreement on the future form of government, nor does it require the signatories to set aside their political differences.
It is an agreement on something more fundamental: whoever holds power in a future Iran must respect and guarantee the rights and dignity of every person.
This process began at our conference in Oslo last year and continued through discussions among participating organisations. We invited all opposition parties and groups to join the process. Our aim has been to build the broadest possible agreement around fundamental human rights, across political divisions. That invitation remains open.
The significance of these #MinimumHumanRightsPrinciples lies precisely in the fact that they are a common minimum. They do not represent the full political programme of any signatory. They establish a shared commitment that must apply regardless of who governs Iran in the future.
We do not have to agree on every aspect of Iran’s future. But no one’s rights should depend on their political views, identity, beliefs or affiliations.
For Iran Human Rights, an independent human rights organisation, this distinction is essential. We do not seek to determine who should govern Iran. Our responsibility is to insist that the rights of all people must be respected, whoever is in power. #OsloConference #کنفرانس_اسلو

Freedom House staff were glad to welcome Nicaraguan democracy advocate Juan Sebastián Chamorro (@Jschamorrog) for a compelling discussion on the decline of democracy and human rights in Nicaragua.
Juan Sebastián was imprisoned by the Ortega regime for nearly two years as part of a broader crackdown on opposition candidates and other civic leaders before being released and forced into exile in February 2023.

Last night, @GaoPu1231 saw his father’s face projected onto the streets of Washington, D.C. Pastor Gao Quanfu is nearly 70, in poor health, and arbitrarily detained since May 2025 for exercising his freedom of religion. Gao Pu’s mother, Pang Yu, also remains arbitrarily detained.
