As an industry, cybersecurity shows neither consensus nor an ability to accurately predict the likelihood that adversaries will exploit a given vulnerability, or the impact if they do. This is especially true for the ones labelled ‘critical.’ The culture of guessing is ending. We must aspire to become an industry capable of forecasting exploitation, quantifying impact, and being held to it. The data is available, and the path forward is paved by evidence.

In the 4 days since php2shell was published: * 1,448 more CVEs published. * No published exploit code for any in Metasploit or Exploit-DB. * VulnCheck added 25 on its KEV list. 24 are old bugs. * CISA added just 1 to its KEV list, the only new bug anyone has seen adversaries exploit. Nothing in the record shows AI or anything else driving up how many vuln adversaries exploit, or how fast. Adversaries keep working a small set of bugs until those stop paying, and only then move on. Patch php2shell because there are too many eyes are on it not to. Then apply the same rule to everything else, prioritize patching all systems against what adversaries exploit. It sounds simple, and the evidence says it’s what we still haven’t done that actually works.

I'll leave this here to see how well it ages. A year from now, and again the year after, the broader software and IT ecosystem will contain more vulnerabilities than ever before. This is neither a value judgment nor a prediction of doom. It is an inescapable reality of software. Cybersecurity must account for that reality strategically, operationally, and financially. And it can do so successfully.

Just imagine the positive impact if the attention on #php2shell was instead focused on patching VPN appliances.

Even in context of the vuln disclosures this week, we've made a lot of progress. Back then, these guys could do exactly as they claimed.
28 years ago today, 7 members of the hacking group @L0phtHeavyInd told the U.S. Senate they could "shut down the internet in 30 minutes."

When someone actually has an effective agent swarm, I suspect it’ll spend more time working offline recreating target environments, reverse engineering EDRs, and building exploits than hammering every app, API, and port. Stealth ends up being preparation. You can run Nessus, every web scanner imaginable, BloodHound, etc. simultaneously, and something will probably shake out. You’re also lighting up traditional detection tools and whatever comes next. The real value is a “one shot, one kill” mentality. Recreate the target environment and its defenses in a lab, understand the EDR and its nuances, and work through failures offline before touching the actual target. More hands banging on keyboards in a compromised environment, even robot hands, isn’t how you maintain stealth. Unless your goal is smash and grab(ransomware), but that’s a wildly different conversation.

Yes. What he said. And, if you look close, all very knowable in advance when you're able to distinguish between what's possible vs what's probable.

Get ready for AI Security’s Fight Night! Three debates on Day 2 After Hours of [un]prompted. Your fight card: Where is the Vulnpocalypse? @EppSecurity, creator of the Zero Day Clock, and @jeremiahg, founder of WhiteHat Security and CEO of Root Evidence, will debate the resolution: “AI noise hasn’t moved the needle on current cyber risk.” Burn Down the Playbook: Can Yesterday’s Defenses Stop Tomorrow’s Attacks? Tim Brown (CISO-in-Residence, Team8; former SolarWinds CISO) and @gadievron (CEO, Knostic; Chair, [un]prompted) will debate how to build a security program that can defend against agent swarms. Too Big to Jail: Do Human Attackers Also Get Misalignment and Act Rogue? @k8em0 (Founder & CEO, Luta Security) vs. @raistolo (Full Professor, Politecnico di Milano) will debate if humans escape sandboxes, or do they use a sandbox escape? Should corporations be held accountable for cyber attacks? …What is consciousness anyway? Debates shepherded by one of the world’s leading debate coaches, Professor Stephen Llano, Ph.D. (St. John’s University). We’re 13 days out from [un]prompted II, the AI Security Practitioner Conference, where the AI security industry convenes to share what they’ve built, tested, deployed, and what failed. October 27–29 at the Hibernia in San Francisco or online. Register: unpromptedcon.org Thank you to our Sponsors: Knostic, TachTech, Censys, Ent, WorkOS, Decibel Partners, Whiterabbit, Zenity, RunSybil, AISLE™ Thank you to our Community Partners: SANS Institute, Cloud Security Alliance, RSAC, FIRST.

[25 DAYS OUT!] I get to moderate Joshua Corman @joshcorman, Michael Collins, and Daniel Miessler @DanielMiessler and I am not playing it cool. No chance. SANS Summit attendees, buckle up. Joshua Corman @joshcorman does not think a patch is an apology. Sometimes the fix is a valve, a person, or taking the system off the network. He founded I Am The Cavalry and now leads UnDisruptable27, which is water, hospitals, food, and power staying up. Michael Collins has spent twenty years breaking into networks. He found a crashed drone at his datacenter, built a hacking kit he could fly, and then watched someone use the idea in a real attack. Still no thank-you note. He thinks the change is writing the exploit, not finding the bug. He is a senior principal security engineer at Mastercard. Daniel Miessler @DanielMiessler says an AI sounds smartest when you do not know the subject, and that defenders are losing to their own process. He also knows he grabs the wheel and ruins the result. He runs Unsupervised Learning and builds AI systems meant to carry a person’s goals into the work. Before that he did security at Apple, Robinhood, and HP. @SANSInstitute AI Cybersecurity Summit, November 2–3 in Arlington, Virginia or online. Come train and learn with us. @GadiEvron does not use community as another word for agreement. He told @jeremiahg in a LinkedIn thread, “I’ve never disagreed with you more. Look forward to our next discussion.” Glad we don't have to wait long for Gadi and Jeremiah to talk. They'll be live onstage alongside @k8em0 Katie Moussouris, Marcus Hutchins, @EppSecurity Sergej Epp with Ciaran Martin moderating at the @SANSInstitute AI Cybersecurity Summit. (54 days out!) A Gadi non-negotiable is building and serving the security community. The rest, I think, is up for discussion. At the first @unpromptedconf AI Security con (which could be the next DEF CON) he said, “the only thing that really matters is not the talks. You can see them online for free. It’s the people you met. When it comes down to it, we are people. We talk to each other.” Gadi is the founder and CEO of @knosticai, CISO-in-Residence for AI at the @cloudsa, and chair of [un]prompted. His work is not merely to “secure AI.” Example - OpenAnt (open source LLM-based vulnerability discovery product, "similar to Anthropic's Claude Code Security, but free") forces an AI-generated vulnerability claim to survive a constrained attacker test, traces the exploit path, and then runs the exploit in a disposable sandbox. Smart people are reaching very different conclusions about AI security. If we stop talking, we end up working against each other from separate echo chambers. That would be a spectacularly stupid way to handle a hard problem. (Cybersecurity has produced a few of those.) Be like our friend Gadi and talk to people who you disagree with. I think this could be one of the best panels of the year. (Yes, I know how low that bar is.) Join us Nov 2-3. Your registration includes access to the @unpromptedconf AI Security Online conference: go.sans.org/YjGCXr

The Vulnpocalypse was supposed to be here by now... so where is it? In our new research, we traced every confirmed exploitation of a published CVE since 2018. On Wednesday, Sept. 2, @jeremiahg and @RSnake are hosting a webinar to walk through what the data actually shows. At the end of the hour, you'll be able to answer: → Whether AI is really growing your backlog faster, and what that changes about what you patch → How to tell the 1.5% of CVEs that get exploited from the ones that never do → Whether you should be planning for more zero-days than you were three years ago → Why the median patch-to-exploit window is the wrong number to build an SLA on → Which of your CVEs get attacked inside 30 days, and which sit untouched for over a year → Which vendors and vulnerability classes are worth most of your patching hours Attendees will get access to the full data in our upcoming Vulnpocalypse Report before it is publicly released. 🎙️ Webinar: Rumors of the Vulnpocalypse Have Been Greatly Exaggerated 📅 Wednesday, Sept. 2 at 9am PT 🔗 na2.hubs.ly/H07p4dw0
