This is a harsh reality, but I disagree on this take
Yes we're in a K-shaped economy
Yes gamblification works
But to truly win in consumer finance, you need to have the best intention for the client at the heart of everything
'Gamblification' in the short term may win, but there's numerous examples of it not working long term
2016's --> Sneaker reselling
2018's --> Crypto ICO offerings
2020's --> AMC/GME meme trading
2022's --> NFT's
2024's --> Solana style meme trading
2026's --> TBD (Maybe Pokemon cards, rip-it style stuff)
Anyone can build a gambling consumer product and blow up (probably illegally) overnight because of the way social media works
You make fake promises, you fake returns, and obviously people will download your app
But to build a true Consumer Finance winner like @vladtenev with @RobinhoodApp or @leifthunder with @public , you need to built for the longevity of the customer
It's a bummer, but I wish more people strived to build the next JP Morgan vs the next slot machine
The next big consumer finance app won’t win on yield, but it’ll win on gamification (or gamblification, rather).
Had an interesting chat with a friend building in the space and it changed how I look at retail.
Average users don’t care about 1% more cashback on a neobank or 2% more yield on a vault. Those numbers are too small to move human behavior.
What actually retains users is the journey, and more and more that means gamification. It’s what keeps people hooked:
• Perps over spot - onchain equity perps did ~16x the volume of tokenized stock spot in June.
• Points programs - farming drives more volume than the product itself (see Variational flipping tradexyz)
• Prediction markets - turning every news into something you can bet on
• Lotteries - no-loss lotteries pool the yield and pay it to random winners. People prefer a small chance at a big win over a tiny guaranteed return
• Memecoins - the purest form of it
You can see it as negative or positive, but the market’s clearly been moving there for a few years now.
Funny part is I’m the opposite, still min-maxing neobanks for the lowest fees and best net cashback lol. I’m probably not the average user, but I can totally see this becoming the new reality.
