Ahead of Tuesday’s election, I spent the past week driving across Israel and the West Bank, from Lebanon to the gates of Gaza.
This is the country I found, frenetic, divided, angry, joyful, messianic and anxious. Its future is up for grabs.

Last week I joined @bradlander and @rabbis4HR for the Palestinian olive harvest, and encountered a full-blown crisis of Jewish identity.
Beyond this one election is something bigger: a splintering of the Jewish world over Israel

Is this the end of Netanyahu?
My essay for @unherd on the existential question this projected hung Knesset is asking of the Israeli opposition: what kind of democracy is Israel?
Every Israeli has woken up knowing the existential question this projected hung Knesset, with Arab parties as kingmakers, is asking of them: what kind of democracy is Israel? But one thing is clear. This election was a referendum on Netanyahu himself, and he seems to have lost that poll. It looks like the Bibi bloc has collapsed from a 68-seat majority in the last Knesset, to a minority this morning. Early numbers suggest most Israeli voters have rejected him and his allies. We will have to wait until Thursday for final results, and these may well prove slightly different.

Don’t doubt the quality of the polling, but I’m sceptical about the salience of this issue.
Just nowhere near top of mind for anyone I’ve spoken to this past week in Israel, you’d have to actively bring it up for it to feature in conversation
Ed Miliband’s sanctions on West Bank settlers have made Israelis more likely to vote for Benjamin Netanyahu’s bloc in next week’s elections, polling shows

BREAKING
The Treasury’s entrepreneurship adviser has announced she is quitting.
Alex Depledge tells my colleague @hannahprevett start-ups are treated as a “sideshow” and a “nice to have”.
“Entrepreneurship can’t be seen as a good news bonus on the margins of economic policy. That mentality is really dangerous for British business as a whole…”
Depledge due to leave her role on Thursday, the day after the Budget.

It is still just so extraordinary to me that the government basically loan sharked an entire generation of students.
If they’d outsourced it to Wonga, the outcomes wouldn’t have been much worse

Burnham may be steering the UK back towards Brussels, but Europe is changing, moving right, more protectionist, more populist. Le Pen looms.
How might this affect the rejoin ambitions of Britain’s “ode to joy” coalition?

There was speculation Jonathan Powell would leave with Starmer. He stayed on, which was a boon for Burnham, given Powell’s unique role in Labour foreign policy.
But he appears to have lost influence in this government. Now Tim’s reporting, suggests he may call it a day

Two weeks until the Budget, and everyone has a view on what the Chancellor should do.
I talked to @joshglancy at @TimesRadio earlier today about the Budgets I worked on, and the one to come.
Spoiler: none of the choices are easy.
