Across the Great Lakes region, competition over natural resources, climate pressures and protracted conflicts present interconnected challenges. But what if the way we manage shared resources could also create opportunities for dialogue, cooperation and trust? Today, we are co-hosting a panel at the #SIPRIForum exploring how inclusive conflict transformation and natural resource management can strengthen community resilience, address grievances and build lasting peace. Because building peace also means transforming how we relate to our environment, our resources and one another.

From learning to action: Strengthening civil society’s role in transitional justice. The 3rd cohort of the Capacity Strengthening Training on the African Union Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP) has concluded in Naivasha, Kenya. Over three days, civil society and community-based organisation representatives explored key principles of transitional justice and reconciliation, shared experiences from their respective contexts, and strengthened their capacity to engage in policy implementation and community-level processes. The training reinforced the significance of civil society participation in advancing meaningful inclusive, locally owned, gender-responsive and trauma-informed transitional justice processes. As participants take their learning back to their respective organisations and communities, the focus now shifts from learning into practice, strengthening and maintaining collaboration, and further contributing to sustainable peace across the Horn of Africa and Great Lakes region. #AUTJP #TransitionalJustice #Peacebuilding #CivilSociety

Peacebuilding takes more than funding. It takes trust, meaningful partnerships and sustained support for local leadership. Today, the Life & Peace Institute is participating in the Stockholm Forum on Peace and Development 2026. Together with @Saferworld, LPI is co-hosting a session exploring what sustains local peacebuilders in times of crisis, drawing on experiences from Ukraine and the Horn of Africa. We will join fellow practitioners and partners to discuss how we can strengthen local agency, organisational resilience and locally led peacebuilding.

The third cohort of the Capacity Strengthening Training on the African Union Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP) is underway in Naivasha, Kenya! The Horn of Africa Regional Program (HARP), in collaboration with @_IJR_ and @_CSVR, has convened the 3rd cohort of the African Union Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP) Capacity-Strengthening Training in Naivasha, Kenya, from 28–30 October 2026. The training has brought together diverse representatives of civil society and community-Based organisations from across the Horn of Africa and the Great Lakes region to further strengthen their understanding of the AUTJP and explore practical approaches to advancing transitional justice, reconciliation, and sustainable peace in their respective contexts. For the first time, the training has also included persons with disabilities (PWDs), with Sign Language interpretation provided to support their meaningful participation. This marks an important step towards amplifying voices that are often underrepresented in transitional justice spaces and ensuring that diverse perspectives and lived experiences inform conversations on justice, reconciliation, and sustainable peace. @SweinEthiopia

Three Years of Action. Stories of Change. Lessons for the Future. 🌍 Today, we come together at the Mobility & Movement (M&M) Summit to celebrate a journey of peacebuilding, resilience and community-led transformation across the Kenya–Ethiopia borderlands. Over the past three years, communities have demonstrated what becomes possible when dialogue leads to collective action. From rebuilding trust and reopening cross-border markets and mobility corridors to strengthening livelihoods, restoring rangelands and improving cooperation on peace and security, the stories emerging from the borderlands remind us that peace is not just the absence of conflict. It is the presence of opportunities, relationships and collective resilience. Today's summit brings together communities, government representatives, development partners and other stakeholders to reflect on achievements, share lessons and explore how these gains can be sustained beyond the project. The journey continues, driven by communities and strengthened through partnerships. #MMSummit #MobilityAndMovement #PeaceAcrossBorders #ResilientCommunities #KenyaEthiopia #CommunityLedPeace #HDPNexus @EUinKenya

What happens when communities, leaders and authorities work together? Responses are becoming more proactive and the community is leading the conversations. The challenge ahead is making that cooperation lasting. Will these relationships last beyond the project? Will they hold when new pressures arise? The M&M / Borderlands Pre-Summit is where we’ll tackle these questions together. Eight disaster risk reduction committees. Four in Kenya, four in Ethiopia. What changes when a warning is heard and acted on early? Communities become more prepared and less fragile. Drought and insecurity strike the same livelihoods. Now communities and institutions are linking what they know to the decisions they make. At the M&M / Borderlands Pre-Summit, we’ll explore how the community prepare before conditions worsen. Borders and trust When a border becomes a bridge, communities move closer together, routes reopen, markets revive, and neighbours who once kept their distance now trade with each other. “Before, we suspected each other like foes. Now we have built a healthy relationship; we buy and sell to each other.” — Dukale community respondent Across the Kenya-Ethiopia borderlands, trust is shaping a new kind of resilience. At the M&M / Borderlands Pre-Summit, communities, authorities and partners will reflect on what has changed and what it will take to keep these ties strong Moyale | 22 October 2026 #MobilityAndMovement #CrossBorderResilience #Peacebuilding #ResilientLivelihoods #Moyale @EUinKenya

What does climate, peace and security look like at the local level? We took this question to the Moyale, Kenya–Ethiopia border. Through the Horn of Africa Community of Practice on Climate, Peace and Security (CoP-CPS), policymakers from IGAD Member States and LPI’s borderland civil society partners came together to learn and reflect. From the One Stop Border Post to communities living along and across the border, we engaged with cross-border peace and natural resource committees, women, men, young people and community leaders. We listened to the challenges faced by communities but also witnessed how local actors are responding to the impacts of climate change through resilience. Each voice offered a different perspective -- Together, they showed what climate, peace and security looks like at the grassroots and what is needed from those shaping policy. Like the strings of a harp, every voice contributes to the harmony. Different voices - a stronger resilient region - a more peaceful tomorrow! #ClimatePeaceSecurity #HornOfAfrica #Borderlands #Peacebuilding #CentringThePeripheries @SweinEthiopia @IGAD_CPAC
