UnrealScript ignored null pointer access and skipped over the often, C/C++ crashes, C#/Java throw an exception, and Verse notes that the code may fail and requires you to wrap it in a conditional and handle it. This is our modern approach to catching as many problems as possible at compile time.

Replying to @gabriel_zucman

Impressive and unavoidable.
I started my gaming career porting Windows games to Linux. And man was I jealous of the Visual Studio debugger being stuck with gdb. So when I joined Epic in January 2001 the first thing I did was open Visual Studio to give the debugger a spin... only to find UE1 didn't have a debug configuration. So my claim to fame was adding the debug configuration to Unreal Engine. This week I made sure nothing is creating any debug information locally as it's just wasted compile time and storage as agents can just read and debug the raw assembly without any help. Full circle.

I can see why Epic have doubled down on AI and an accelerated route to a slimmed down and restructured UE6. There is a window of opportunity right now where agentic workflow focused tech has the ability to overtake the current engines. It's all about iteration time and how much can be automated and customised. Existing tech stacks are going to struggle to restructure around the ability to drive *everything* from an agent. Full headless operation, comprehensive test coverage, smart asset pipelines and packaging, custom per-title tooling, bespoke optimised core systems. This isn't just driving the UI via MCP, this is designing around agent access at every level. Building from the ground up, with agents as the primary customer, means you gain an automation advantage at every single point of contact. You're not going to be able to restructure that radically while keeping all the creaking old systems working in parallel... you're just burning time before the inevitable happens.

Exponentials are working in your favor. Opus 5.5 is the first model that is good enough for game development and it is what ported UE5 to the web and hill climbed performance, memory, and download size of my little excavator project. Cost per task / fixed level of intelligence has been going down by a factor of ~14 per year and that will probably accelerate. And that doesn't even factor in making the engine more efficient for AI to use.
A big problem with this is that many of us indie devs simply can't afford these AI model subscriptions. The UE engine made competing possible for us, and now we're being priced out again. Progress can't be held back on our account, but it is what it is.

Can Mistral Large 4 find a critical vulnerability, prove it and fix it? We tested it on a recent Django CVE. 133 agents map the code, hunt for flaws, test attack scenarios and confirm the bug. Then Le Chonk patches it. Triage, repro, patch. Shown at 90x speed.

it's such a great time again
Today I had nine Macs building and testing nine iPhone Duo apps at the same time. I used zero physical Macs. What's happening now with cloud agents is like early AWS or serverless days. EC2 let you go from one server to a hundred and back. Serverless let you forget servers entirely. Devin is Lambda for engineering work: you send a task, and an agent plus its computer exist only while the job runs, and if you set your AWS credentials you can run cloud agents there as well (EC2 for builds, GPU boxes for games and ML, all in your account). In 2006, startups stopped buying servers to run their infrastructure, now we're seeing them no longer needing hardware to even build their software.

Crime without accountability is practice. Justice is not vengeance. When the Soviet Union collapsed, we let euphoria blind us to the need for the hard work of investigation and responsibility. Do not forgive, do not forget, and clean house.

Cyberattack on France’s national blood service (EFS) via its refrigeration contractor Coolworld. Hackers reset freezers keeping blood donor samples at -30°C to a target of 110°C. The thing that stopped it from destructive impact was an on-call technician who noticed the temperatures going up. Frozen plasma intended for transfusion was stored there too. Fortunately nothing was destroyed. This was a cyberattack on a sensitive layer of healthcare. From frozen peas to boiling plasma in three weeks...?

I am so looking forward to seeing how UE6 pans out. I've done a chunk of work with MassEntity and associated modules and they are clearly the way forward. The things holding back UE at the moment are the old object oriented patterns and frameworks. Good as they were there comes a time for radical change. DOD unlocks performance, and if you have agents to deal with the conceptual complexity and Verse to enforce better structure, it's a win-win. This is the OS9 -> OSX moment.
What we are trying to do: Build an engine that’s more powerful than UE5, easier to develop in than Unity, and is the most efficient effective way to build with AI acceleration. The problem with having old systems and new systems side-by-side is the tendency to mix them, and then their interoperability becomes a giant tangle of blueprints and verse, actors and entities. We thought that side-by-side was unavoidable, but AI assisted conversion is now clearly way more effective, and will produce a way more manageable UE6 project than a hybrid, while making it way easier for us to simplify and improve the engine. We’ll be proving it out by converting Fortnite, the game with the largest base of blueprints in existence, to the new approach.

Mac users can now run SteamOS and play PC games on Apple Silicon Macs thanks to FX Steam Launcher, an independent project that runs SteamOS inside a lightweight virtual machine on macOS. Early tests on an M4 Max MacBook Pro showed some impressive results: -The Witcher 3: 70+ FPS at 1080p (High settings). -Left 4 Dead 2: 140+ FPS. -Fallout 4: 60 FPS at 1080p (Medium). -Red Dead Redemption: 70+ FPS at 1080p. Controller support is also included

The last time I felt this excited about game development was the mid 90s when I got hold of a PS1 dev kit and the world of accelerated 3D gaming became real. Agentic workflows unlock possibilities we could only dream of 12 months ago. It’s not just 20x velocity, it is higher quality. We’re only just beginning to grasp what the future will look like. I feel completely obsessed again. Like a kid at Christmas.
