🚨PSA for parents of STEM kids: Please don’t assume computer science is a safe default in 2026. From what I can see, hiring for conventional software development is extremely weak unless you’re working at the AI frontier. Microsoft just announced voluntary buyouts open to about 60,000 employees. That isn’t 60,000 layoffs, but it shows how quickly the industry is changing. Application development is also becoming less interesting as it's more about doing code reviews. My 12-year-old is interested in STEM. Here’s how we’re approaching it: We’re having him do national-level math competitions like AMC 8, MOEMS, and NOETIC. It’s not just about learning math. It’s about learning to compete. He’s using AI to build his own application with a few thousand users. The goal is to learn what to build, not just how to write the syntax. (see: speedcubing dot app) We’re emphasizing math and basic sciences like chemistry, physics, and biology - along side computer science, so he can apply computing to fields like drug discovery or space exploration. If he still wants to focus on computer science classes, we want him to do so with a clear goal, such as AI research, rather than preparing for conventional application-development work. Time will tell. But I worry that the middle and bottom of CS graduating classes in 2026 and beyond will face a tougher job market than previous cohorts.

My kids are in Cambridge public school (home to Harvard and MIT) which has about a 54% meeting expectations rate across grades and subjects. Massachusetts used to be a national education powerhouse.
