This approach highlights a critical gap in periodontal care—most treatments focus on symptoms, not on restoring tissue health. Bridging that gap could redefine outcomes for patients with severe periodontitis. Exciting times ahead.

Penn Engineers and collaborators at @ummedschool have developed a tiny inflatable device that lets researchers precisely control blood flow while continuously imaging the brain, offering a new view of stroke's earliest moments. Led by @ShuYangPenn (@mseatpenn), the MRI-compatible micro-balloon originates from soft robotics research. "As materials scientists, we are always connecting the dots," says Yang. "In this case, techniques we had been developing for soft robotics became the key to answering a longstanding question in stroke research." engineering.upenn.edu/storie…

Sea stars are pointing to the next generation of smart materials. Penn Engineering @MSEatPenn researchers discovered that sea star skeletons don't just provide strength. They also guide light, revealing a natural design that could inspire future materials capable of both protection and sensing. This finding could inspire lightweight engineered materials that not only protect structures but also detect damage or monitor changes in their surroundings without sacrificing strength. bit.ly/4bnPzkf
