The future of Kenya’s tourism sector will not be secured by the destinations we promote alone, but by the people we empower to build businesses, create experiences and tell Kenya’s story to the world.
Young people are central to this future. They are tourism professionals, digital storytellers, innovators and frontline ambassadors shaping how visitors experience Kenya.
From artificial intelligence and digital tourism to culinary experiences, cultural heritage, conservation, wellness and adventure travel, new opportunities are emerging for young people to turn their talents into viable businesses, rewarding careers and sustainable livelihoods.
Tourism is no longer defined by wildlife and traditional hospitality alone. Innovation is expanding what Kenya can offer, creating opportunities for young entrepreneurs to develop distinctive products, reach new markets and position Kenya as a diverse, year-round destination.
Our responsibility as tourism stakeholders is to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity. This requires investment in mentorship, practical training, internships, digital skills, access to finance and markets, and opportunities for young professionals to participate in leadership and decision-making.
One platform advancing this conversation is the Kenya Travel and Tourism Student Symposium, hosted by Strathmore University. Bringing together students from Strathmore University, Kenya Utalii College, the University of Nairobi, KCA University, Maasai Mara University and Gretsa University, the symposium connects emerging talent with industry practitioners and the realities of a rapidly evolving tourism sector.
Such platforms must go beyond knowledge-sharing to foster partnerships, inspire innovation and connect students with real opportunities for entrepreneurship and professional growth.
At the Kenya Tourism Board, we recognise that promoting Kenya as a world-class destination must go hand in hand with nurturing the talent that will sustain its competitiveness. Destination marketing and talent development are complementary investments: one attracts visitors, while the other builds the capacity to deliver memorable experiences and grow tourism’s economic value.
Our ambition must be to prepare young people not merely to seek jobs, but to create them; not simply to join the industry, but to transform it.
The next generation is not just the future of tourism. It is already shaping it. Our responsibility is to give them the skills, platforms and opportunities to lead.

It was a pleasure engaging with students at Strathmore University during the Kenya Travel and Tourism Student Symposium, where I had the honour of delivering the keynote address.
To the young people, growth and success are not a straight line, they are a moving target. Each day presents an opportunity to challenge ourselves, surpass yesterday’s achievements, celebrate progress and remain intentional about the journey ahead.
There will be moments when we need to pause, reassess, build our competence or take a different path. That is not failure, it is wisdom. Life is a continuous classroom, and those who remain curious, read widely and listen deeply will always find opportunities to grow.
To the next generation of leaders in travel, tourism, hospitality, conservation and the creative economy, your ideas matter. Your voice matters. And your contribution to Kenya’s story matters.
Keep learning. Keep building. Keep moving forward.
