Replying to @GovernorShapiro
Governor, you can say "abortion is health care" all day and it won't alter the fact from which you wish to distract us, namely, that abortion is deliberately killing a living member of the human species--a human being and as such a bearer of profound, inherent, and equal dignity.
I will be outnumbered by Muslims at Georgetown next week.
🚨🚨 DCers: Next Wednesday, Oct 28 at 5pm.
@matthewkaemingk and I will be in conversation with the great @AkyolinEnglish to talk about Islam and Christianity's relationship to democracy.
Is religion a problem to be solved or can it help save us?

A very thoughtful review of our new book in @TGC. Grateful to the Christian theologian Gray Sutanto for engaging with the Islamic tradition in the way he does.
"There’s no higher compliment than to say that I wish the book would have been longer."

Thrilled to see this generous and thoughtful review of CAN RELIGION SAVE DEMOCRACY?
My new book with the Evangelical theologian @matthewkaemingk. We argue that lessons and insights from Islam and Christianity can make us better democratic citizens.

"A must-read for anyone skeptical of how religion can advance virtues of toleration and humility in a time of polarization and tribalism."

Our book has made it to the Netherlands.
Translation "Religion has not disappeared, but secular ideologies have taken its place—fueled with the same fervor. And without the limiting influence of religion, nihilistism and fanaticism are given free rein."

New from me and @matthewkaemingk: The political case for hell.
Hell can be good for democracy because it helps us delay judgment until some unspecified point in the future, allowing us to "chill."

Just out from @TomRtweets in @dcexaminer. A thoughtful review of our new book.
"This book is not a preaching screed seeking to herd a lost flock. Well-researched and eloquently argued, this work takes pains not to overburden or talk down to the reader."

As @TomRtweets writes, at the core of our new book is how Islam and Christianity embrace human fallibility. If God is the all-knowing, then not knowing is part of what it means to be human. Final judgment is deferred to God in the next life. So we must be modest with our claims.

We've received a couple extremely thoughtful critiques of our book.
Unfortunately... this isn't one of them.
@jeff_bilbro @CTmagazine just muffed it (thread)
I really wanted to like @shadihamid and @matthewkaemingk's new book. The framing gets a lot right. But the book itself left me disappointed: christianitytoday.com/2026/1…
It is true that some secular people hate religion and refuse to learn from it.
But many others are quite generous and even curious about matters of faith. Many have been deeply impacted by religious insights into the good life.
Bilbro has no theological imagination for this.
