In the name of Christian unity on Reformation Day, I think we should all agree that Martin Luther was right about the perpetual virginity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.

Unpopular opinion: Beaux-Arts mogs the attractive but sinister Art Deco.
America was supposed to be Art Deco. The lobby of 450 Sutter Street, San Francisco, opened in 1929. We don't appreciate this architecture enough.

Ian deserves every square of toilet paper that will inevitably land on his property this evening.
Large candy bars are the considered the holy grail, but giving them out on Halloween missed the point of the holiday, @ibogost argued in 2017: theatln.tc/0pZou0zj

Who can forget when the repeal of "net neutrality" killed us all eight years ago?
For over a decade, Reddit never missed an opportunity to preen about so-called “net neutrality.” It virtue-signaled that the company was “built on the premise of letting individuals decide what content they find interesting. We believe the same basic principle should apply to the internet as a whole.” It launched multiple “Days of Action,” trying to scaremonger people into believing that the internet as we knew it was about to end—obviously wrong then and now. Without utility-style internet regulation, Reddit warned that corporations would take actions solely “for their own profit.” How times have changed. Reddit is now making its own “open” platform a walled garden. Specifically, it’s unilaterally decided to block consumers from accessing Reddit content unless they log in—what it calls a “logged-in-only experience.” (So much for letting “individuals decide what content they find interesting.”) That’s because corporate-controlled access yields more consumer-specific information that benefits Reddit’s own advertising and data businesses. All this despite the company being enormously profitable already—it’s made over $740 million this year, a record by far. Far be it from me to suggest that Reddit must be regulated or prohibited from doing what they think is a key driver of “monetization on Reddit.” Assuming no violations of law or regulation, my views here are clear—and they don’t change, even when corporate leadership previously accused me of corruption and called repealing FCC regulations “un-American.” But when a company that has constantly and vitriolically demanded regulation of its perceived rivals—to prevent alleged harms to consumer from conduct that was purely hypothetical—now explicitly boasts about giving consumers a less-open Internet to benefit its bottom line, it should get the public scrutiny and mockery it richly deserves.

You can cancel an election and ban the winner from running (Romania), you can ban your opponents from ever running again (Hungary), you can threaten to ban the main opposition party and subject it to relentless investigations by the secret police (Germany), you can threaten a ban on the leading presidential candidate and make them wear an ankle monitor (France), every member of your circle can be investigated for corruption (Spain), you can try and cancel local elections because you will lose them (Britain), and you can storm the constitutional court with riot police because you want to control it (Poland). You can just do all these things. The secret is you just have to be on the right side of the European Commission.

Friends, one of the marks of the natural religious attitude is that the seekers are always in control of the conversation: They set out to find ultimate meaning on their own terms. But a revealed religion, like Christianity, holds that God has spoken. Our quest is real and it can be holy, but what finally matters is that God has answered it on his terms.

"Terrific response"? Jesus: Go and make disciples of all nations. Cdl. Vesco: Actually, don't. Bp. Barron: Hey, that guy opposes the Great Commission. Cdl. Vesco: Correct.
Terrific response by Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco to @BishopBarron disgraceful attack on his integrity. Vesco speaks from the Church, Barron for himself.

Ram Chhetri came to the US as a refugee, but this might be worst day of his life: It's the moment he realizes the $80k-$160k/year salary he's bilked from Medicaid for no-show work is coming to an end because @realdailywire caught the truth on camera. We conducted months of surveillance that shows why "home care aide" is now the *most common job* in states like NY, CA, MN, and PA: Because a large part of those jobs are unambiguous Medicaid fraud. Thanks to home care, Bhutanese refugees now make more money than actual PA families. The state doesn't just look the other way, but helps them get away with it. Converting federal health dollars into a universal basic income for certain communities relieves the financial burden they place on the state. The scammers easily deceive the feds' woefully broken monitoring system. You'll see Ram pull into a driveway for 2 minutes in the morning, then 2 minutes in the evening. He clocks in and out of his shift from the right place, and the GPS system doesn't notice that he goes home in between. $20 an hour doesn't sound like much, but at 77 hours a week, it's $80k–and it's easy to bill huge hours when you don't actually have to work them. And that's just for the low-level guys in this scheme.

"Home care" has quickly become the *most common job in blue states*. This video shows why: Because people are billing Medicaid $80k+ a year for work that they aren't actually doing. Watch this refugee pull into a driveway for 2 minutes each day to trick the GPS anti-fraud system:

Well, another Cardinal has come out with a, shall we say, puzzling take on evangelization. A few years ago, Cardinal Américo Aguiar, at the time auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, said that he and the other organizers of World Youth Day in his hometown had no interest in converting anyone to Christ. Now Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco of Algeria has opined that “the Church is not there to convert” and “Christians should approach other religions through fraternity rather than seeking conversions.” Excuse me, but…what? Last time I checked, the Founder said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” Sure sounds like conversion to me. When St. Paul came to Corinth or Athens or Thessalonica, his purpose was not to listen or to form a discussion group but rather to declare an unnerving message: the euangelion (glad tidings) that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead. So impassioned is he for this work that he says, “I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:22); and “If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel” (1 Cor. 9:16)! Moreover, the entire thrust of the Second Vatican Council was toward bringing the Light of Christ to the peoples of the world (Lumen Gentium). And this missionary élan has given rise in the last few decades to the idea of a “new evangelization,” which is to say, a fresh declaration of the Lordship of Christ. Quite obviously, no one thinks that this work of evangelization should be done in a brow-beating, overbearing, or disrespectful manner (proselytization), but for God’s sake, let’s not throw the baby out with the bathwater. If I really thought that the Church does not exist to bring people to Christ, then I would resign and get an honest job.

TRANSLATION: I address the Brazilian people and the international community as the leader of Brazil. First of all, I wanted to thank President Milei for his courage, sense of justice, and legality, and President Trump and the wonderful American people for welcoming me. This is a land of freedoms and brothers who share the same values as the good people of my country. President Trump is a great defender of freedom of expression. On Sunday night, I watched in astonishment as an electoral fraud took shape before my eyes. The illegitimate and illegal action of Lula’s former lawyer allowed a mathematical impossibility to become reality and Lula to add more than 10 million votes from the first to the second round. A decision by the STF, made over and above the competence of the TSE, extended voting at the last minute, and the order only arrived after the end of the legal hours, when the ballot boxes were already closed. Voters were subjected to different rules. So far, the TSE has limited itself to defending the extension of the hours and there is not even a single credible response. And the nullities are not the only problem. Throughout the entire campaign, there was abuse of political and economic power and use of the public machine in favor of reelection. These are serious facts, expressly prohibited by law, that justify the annulment of the Lula-Alckmin ticket. The regime’s response to my questioning came quickly. As if according to a previously prepared plan, seven minutes after this repugnant electoral fraud, the judge, implicated in an immense corruption scandal, directly cited in the inquiry he used to try to seize my passports, and who most likely would be in prison if they had not prevented my inauguration, set in motion the regime’s machine of political persecution. Being barred from the outset and completely suspect to initiate any judicial proceeding against me, his mere participation in procedural acts shows the extent of the arbitrariness and illegality underway. It was not my intention to leave my homeland, but I know exactly where this is going. This is the classic playbook of any coup d’état. The political persecution that began with my father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, and spread to thousands of other ordinary Brazilian patriots and even American citizens, has a single objective: to silence anyone who does not agree with the state of exception installed in Brazil, through a Supreme Court packed by the petista criminal organization. To be clear, there is no arrest warrant against me, because I have not committed any crime. What exists is a politically motivated witch hunt, which aimed to place me as a hostage and object of blackmail to protect the corrupt judges of the Supreme Court from impeachment. This is the script of the persecution: seizure of passport, electronic ankle monitor, censorship, house arrest, sham trial, and finally political conviction. I will not subject my family to this and my country does not deserve to go through this international embarrassment again. Faced with the political instrumentalization of Justice in Brazil, I brought my family to the United States, where we are safe. I thank, once again, President Trump and the American government for welcoming us and giving us the legal security that we no longer have in Brazil. I want to make it clear: I did not flee Brazil, I left for Brazil, I left a regime of exception to be able to be the leader that my people deserve, because silenced, imprisoned and censored, as my father is, I could not be that leadership and we would be handed over to the institutional theater of an opposition castrated and controlled by a Supreme Court full of servants of the regime. I like to imagine the 1975 Oval Office meeting when Gerald Ford, pipe clenched between his teeth, WH Chief of Staff Don Rumsfeld and his deputy Dick Cheney greenlit this ad. Cheney: “It’s the bicentennial next year. We need to get the hippies on board.” Ford: “Darn right. The bums in Haight-Ashbury are American too.” Rumsfeld: “We have just the thing, Mr. President.”
In 1976, the U.S. government funded one of the most psychedelic short films ever made. It was filled with odd images and occult symbols. 🎬 from 200 (1976) by Vince Collins.
