Meet Brian Corpuz, Staff Engineer at Motional. When designing the cooling system for our IONIQ 5 robotaxi, built to keep 3 primary vehicle systems running safely, our strategy was straightforward: keep it simple. Hit play to see how Brian and the team engineered a cooler, smarter autonomous ride.

How our robotaxi handles unpredictable driving behavior makes all the difference for the rider experience. When another vehicle cuts in aggressively, our robotaxi responds calmly and safely without sacrificing comfort. #wowwednesday

How hot is the Las Vegas summer? Hot enough that extreme solar radiation can shift camera alignments by a fraction of a degree, and in autonomous driving, fractions matter. To ensure our robotaxis can handle extreme desert heat, our engineering team recreated intense solar radiation indoors to evaluate camera mount deflection under solar load. Swipe to read the full story and see how we build robust perception systems for real-world extremes!

You might miss someone walking behind some bushes, but our robotaxi won’t. Navigating busy shopping areas like Town Square means keeping an eye out for what’s coming, even when it’s hidden from view. Thanks to 360° sensing and real-time tracking, we can see past blind spots to keep pedestrians and riders safe. 🌿 👀 #wowwednesday

True peace of mind comes from knowing your ride is always two steps ahead. See how our robotaxi detects a stalled vehicle ahead and decisively initiates a lane change, while yielding to provide time and space for the vehicle in front space to merge first. By reading the entire scene, we prioritize safety and keeping traffic moving efficiently for everyone. #wowwednesday

We know that other drivers don't always follow the rules of the road… so while the Motional robotaxi had the right of way, it detected the other car turning left despite having a stop sign, enabling it to stop in plenty of time. #wowwednesday

Teaching self-driving cars to think like humans isn't easy, until now. nuReasoning gives autonomous vehicles the human-like reasoning they need to navigate complex edge cases. 🧠 🚘 Are you ready for a challenge? If you're building autonomous driving systems, robotics, or spatial foundation models, your algorithms need to handle the long tail of edge cases. No one likes a sudden stop, especially on Las Vegas Blvd. When a truck merged to reveal a stopped construction vehicle, we safely merged to clear the hazard and kept up with traffic, ensuring a smooth ride. 🚧 #wowwednesday

Construction zones don't always come with massive warning signs, sometimes it's just a few yellow cones in the road. See how our robotaxi detects the hazard, cautiously yields to a passing car on the right, and smoothly changes lanes to avoid the cones. ✌️ :toaster: #wowwednesday

*No retrofitting required Straight from Hyundai Motor Group Innovation Center Singapore (HMGICS) to Motional’s Las Vegas Technical Center! Arriving fully assembled from the production line, all the IONIQ 5 robotaxis need is Motional decals. Before getting shipped our way, HMGICS employees perform critical diagnostics, calibration, and validation tasks to ensure the IONIQ 5 robotaxi meet exacting specifications and are ready for autonomous operation. 🚕 ✅

We partnered with @MIT researchers to bring clarity and transparency to AI reasoning processes in self-driving systems. Check out their recent article to learn more!
Self-driving cars sometimes fail in unexpected situations. For instance, the car might inexplicably brake and block the path of an oncoming emergency vehicle. A human driver or passenger may need to react rapidly to prevent a collision. To help humans better anticipate a vehicle’s mistakes, researchers from MIT and autonomous vehicle technology company Motional developed a new method that provides clear explanations of the underlying model’s decisions. news.mit.edu/2026/system-hel…

Cones ahead? No problem. Watch our robotaxi detect an active construction zone, recognize the need to switch lanes, and patiently merge behind traffic on the right. #wowwednesday
