Outside of his service with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, Quincy was a volunteer member of the Cecil Fire Department in Williamstown, Gloucester County.
Quincy described his work with the Forest Fire Service not simply as a career. “It’s a lifestyle, not a career,” he said. “A career, I would say, is something that you do from 9 to 5, but this job could be 24 hours a day. I plan my activities at home around it. It’s a lifestyle.”
The New Jersey Forest Fire Service is deeply saddened to share the passing of Section Forest Fire Warden Quincy Jones. Quincy passed early on the morning of September 22nd following a brief battle with cancer.
Although he found no one else inside, he discovered a propane tank among the debris that could have caused another explosion and alerted first responders.
With the help of neighbors, Quincy was able to lift the wall and get the woman to safety. Once she was secure, Quincy entered what remained of the burning home to search for other occupants, despite the danger to his own safety.
Quincy was driving home with his dog after a veterinary appointment when he saw the fire. He pulled into his driveway, got out of his vehicle and ran toward the home. He found a resident trapped beneath a collapsed front wall.
The award recognized an act of heroism in December 2021, when Quincy encountered the burning remains of a home in Vineland that had exploded just minutes earlier, only a block from his residence.
In May 2023, Quincy received the New Jersey Award of Heroism during the State Employee Recognition Day Awards Ceremony in Trenton.
