1/ This is what a real answer to "how is my kid doing in reading?" looks like.
Not "she's doing fine." Not "a little behind." A specific point on a 12-point scale, plus the exact skills to work on next.

Much less offensive aesthetic than Mentava. Downloaded and will try.

Exactly. An app whose finish line is a paper book is one I'd happily hand to our 3 year old.

this should be a standardized method of learning to read in schools

Your first point is the product insight. The parent decides whether tomorrow's lesson happens, so the habit you have to build is theirs. Designing the parent into every lesson is why this one lasts.

Huge fan as well! Wish I had started with this with my 6 year old when she was 4
Be like @petergyang Teach your kiddo to read.
Of all the learning apps that my 4-year-old and I have tried, @once_reading is the only one that we’ve managed to persist in following for months.
It works because:
1. It builds a habit where you need to learn with your kid daily
2. It has lightweight gamification like taking a silly photo with your kid after every lesson
3. After 30 lessons, Once will send you books for your kid to read by themselves, giving them a big feeling of accomplishment
My kid loves reading now and will even choose her Once books over YouTube and the phone (sometimes at least) which is the highest compliment 😅
This is not sponsored or anything I just love the product.

Ouch.
Wondering where your kid is actually reading, and what you can do about it?

"too many states have chosen to tell parents their children are on track when they aren’t" say Arne Duncan and Margaret Spellings in a new Ed Week piece linked below.
These charts compare the most recent National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) 4th gr reading and math reports with the state testing reports.
The discrepancies are surprising. If judged by national standards, students in most states are not as proficient in reading and math as the state tests say they are. Link to more charts below.

✏️ Pop quiz: Is @once_reading built understanding that:
A) Sm-grp tutoring is very effective
B) SoR is very effective
C) All of the above
It's C.
We have always used what the research says is best. That's why it works.
Sophie says kids deserve better. We agree. Her wonderful Substack is a "syllabus for making childhood more interesting."

They'll grow up in a world full of AI. Reading is the one skill it can't do for them.
This weekend is the perfect time to start.
Thanks for the callout @jessegenet! Love following what you're doing for your kiddos!

Direct Instruction is why teaching your kiddo to read can be simple (not always easy).
We've had the precise playbook for 40+ years. Using @once_reading to teach your kiddo makes it simple and fun.
Outside the school context, the overwhelmingly dominant mode of teaching people things is to use Direct Instruction — you literally show them what to do and make them practice it — but education theorists insist this is bad.
