With all the misinformation around the charter moratorium/cap law, we need to remember that facts matter. With the pause in effect, let’s take a look at one fact per day. As always, DM for a conversation. 1. AFT started the charter school movement.

Teachers are forced to follow bad mandates from unqualified bosses, political appointees, & educrats then blamed when the bad mandates fail. Let’s try listening to the actual teachers.
after NCLB principals told us to integrate science and social studies into the literacy block to save time. then districts mandated bloated literacy programs that effectively eliminated the disciplines. now they claim it’s teachers who are against content-based curriculum

For 7 1/2 yrs, @AInfanteGreen prioritized data manipulation in order appeal to out-of-state think-tanks. She & her bloated layer of bosses put their own galavanting ahead of students. The new commissioner must put students ahead of their own ambitions.

The next @RIDeptEd commissioner can set RI on a path towards student success by eliminating directives created in think-tanks by consultants. Give teachers their planning time back & let them teach using known best practices. Also allow orderly classrooms.
For 25 years, educrats w/ little teaching experience have stripped actual teachers of autonomy. These bosses failed our students by mandating unproven theories developed by the consultant class. Let’s get back to what teachers know will work for kids!

There is a competent professional staff at @RIDeptEd. Over the past five years, @AInfanteGreen has neglected these qualified workers & created a bloated admin layer of less qualified, resume-building, galavanting bosses. Time to clean house.

There is a world of difference between candidates who believe a vote must be earned and those who believe it is owed.

RI will soon have a new ed commissioner. The intergalactic searches haven’t worked. This time, let’s choose an actual educator who understands RI students, teachers, & public schools—not another outsider more interested in building a personal brand than improving public education

4/5 Want to solve the teacher shortage? Make teaching a profession people want to enter—and stay in. Pay competitive wages. Respect educators. Improve working conditions. Restore the retirement benefits that were taken away in 2012.

5/5 Teachers shouldn’t be forced to work longer because policymakers failed to make the profession attractive to the next generation. Workers rebuilt the pension fund. It’s time to rebuild retirement. Rule of 85. Increased accruals. COLA.

3/5 You can’t have it both ways. You can’t claim teachers are so essential that we can’t afford to let them retire while refusing to treat them like the valued professionals they are.

1/5 @RISenate @RIHouseofReps Some school administrators and politicians oppose restoring retirement security through the Rule of 85 because they claim there aren’t enough younger teachers to replace those who retire. Think about that argument.

2/5 These same people refuse to negotiate fair contracts, fight against competitive wages, micromanage educators, and too often tolerate the mistreatment of teachers. Then they wonder why fewer people want to enter the profession.

Candidates & electeds agree: workers were robbed by 2012 pension reforms. Now it's time to act. Workers rebuilt the fund. It's time to rebuild retirement. A glide path to pension justice: ✓ Rule of 85 ✓ Increased accruals ✓ COLA Pro-worker promises demand pro-worker action.

Workers have done their part to rebuild the pension fund. It’s time to rebuild retirement security. Reamortizing pension through 2045 can create a path to pension justice NOW: ✅ Rule of 85 ✅ Increased accrual rates ✅ COLA restoration A responsible path forward.

The history of the @RIDeptEd takeover of @pvdschools is riddled with admin whistleblowers, infighting, leaks, NDAs, targeting, dysfunction, preferential treatment, & resignations. On top of that, @AInfanteGreen refused a thoughtful transition to local control
The toxicity & chaos in @pvdschools are the direct result of @AInfanteGreen’s leadership failure. Possibly intentional…..

AFT-RI is organizing for Rule of 85, accrual increases, and COLA restoration. We can accomplish all of these improvements by putting the fund on a glide path to 2045. Workers rebuilt the fund, now rebuild pensions. @RIHouseofReps @RISenate
