Update: Cyrus McGarrell, a DB transfer from Northern Illinois U, has been assigned jersey #3 for Western, becoming the first Mustang football player to don the number since 2009 when new head coach (then-QB) Michael Faulds wore it. McGarrell wore #2 & #22 during his NIU career.
According to the 2026 Western Mustangs football roster, no one has been assigned jersey #3 this season, despite the number being unretired by its last owner, new head coach @MichaelFaulds, earlier this year. RB Jack Kelly, who wore the now-retired #13 last season, will wear #4.

Following the 2009 @OUAsport football season, Western head football coach Greg Marshall said “as long as I’m the head coach here, no one will ever wear #3.” Michael Faulds flipped the script on him this year, unretiring 3, and retiring Marshall’s old number, 13. 📸 @westernuFB

CTE isn't, for the most part, caused by just a few concussions. Former Western U DB/LB and current head injury researcher Jeff Brooks explains why the more likely cause is the accumulation of head impacts over a career — and why prevention has to start young.

Kickoffs consistently produce the highest-force head impacts in football. Former Western U linebacker Jeff Brooks explains why the long run-up before contact changes the physics of the hit entirely. The "hammer and the nail," breaking down who takes the brunt of the force.

Former Western U linebacker-turned-researcher Jeff Brooks tracked 127,000 head impacts across 63 college football players. The average 3+ year U Sports career total: 2,000. For linemen and linebackers (like what both of us played)? Up to 3,500.

Western Mustangs linebacker-turned-researcher Jeff Brooks says no concussion symptoms ≠ no damage. The idea: treat head impacts like a pitch count. Hit your threshold → helmet off, non-contact only, until you recover. Full ep of Suns Out Stangs Out out now 🎙️

He didn't think it was a concussion until he started researching them after his playing career. Jeff Brooks on his head-on-head hit against McMaster the former linebacker still thinks about — and what "a weird shade of blue" for 2–3 minutes actually meant.
