President Isaias was in Moscow for the Russia-Africa Summit. In an interview with Sputnik, he made it abundantly clear he was “not coming from the vantage point of Eritrea and Eritrean interests because it has nothing to do with the reality on the ground.” One is at a loss what to make of such a statement coming, as it does, from a leader of an impoverished nation that spends most of its meager resources more to bankroll destabilizing campaigns throughout the region than in building badly needed clinics or schools. Far from pursuing bilateral relations that could perhaps help improve the plight of his people, he has made it perfectly clear he is more interested in ‘righting the wrongs’ in the global financial system including addressing the containment policy against Russia than in taking care of bread and butter issues of the people of Eritrea. In light of President Isaias’ proclivities to punching above his weight, such grandstanding is not entirely out of character. What’s so striking about his remarks in Moscow, however, his dismissal of the relevance of individual countries’ cases including that of Eritrea as agenda in the summit in Moscow called exactly to address Russia’s relations with African countries. Many on social media were commenting on President Isaias’ dejected look, with his hands loosely hanging by his waist, and looking confused and out of place. Indeed, for a casual observer, the Eritrean president cut a sad figure throughout the summit and appeared to have difficulty fitting in the hustle bustle in Moscow. But that’s beside the point. The bottomline is President Isaias didn’t hold any bilats, didn’t address the gathering nor proffer his unsolicited views on global order to the Summit. He was just too bored to broach such silly subjects as Russo-Eritrean relations or Russo-African relations. If anything, this is yet another admission by the Eritrean President for life that when it comes to his priorities as a leader it is the unfairness in the global order, not Eritrea’s national interest, that comes front and center. After all, Eritrea has always been too small a project for a president whose imperial overreach knows no boundaries.

A great panel, indeed!
Tana Forum’s high-level panel, “From the Margins to the Centre: Building an African Model for Peace and Sovereignty in an Age of Geopolitical Rivalry,” brought together leaders from Burundi, Mozambique, Kenya, Uganda and Sierra Leone to examine this question.

I met and had discussions with H.E. Ambassador Guang Cong Special Envoy of the UN Secretary Geneal for the Horn of Africa. Our discussions focused on the conflict in Sudan, coming elections in South Sudan, Somalia and more importantly on the situation in Tigray. I briefed the Special Envoy on the developments that unfolded since the 23rd of September and potential role for the UN in supporting the newly established Caretaker Administration especially in areas related to strengthening rehabilitation efforts, expediting humanitarian aid and return of IDPs. I also underlined the need for the international community to be mindful of the destructive role the Regime in Asmara had and continues to have in destabilizing the entire region and Ethiopia in particular. Ambassador Cong on his part promised to do all he can for the UN to play a meaningful role in ensuring peace and stability in the region.

Erv has been around long enough to have a better understanding of the subject matter of his interview.
Ambassador Massinga sat down with The Reporter to discuss the ongoing situation in northern Ethiopia. He underscored that now is the time for Tigray to move ahead with the principles of the Pretoria agreement, including democracy, return of IDPs, restoration of administration, DDR, and humanitarian access. The Ambassador reiterated the United States’ commitment to lasting peace and stability in Ethiopia, the bedrock for economic development and which allows all people to forge their own destinies. The defunct TPLF leadership has officially admitted to having decided to resort to classic terrorist tactics in order to remind the people of Tigray that there was once such a thing as TPLF. They are telling us that they will shoot down civilian planes en route to Mekelle, among other heinous crimes it craves to commit. Yet another good reason why the people of Tigray are better off without these lunatics.

I held a very fruitful telephone conversation with U.S. Secretary of State @marcorubio on key bilateral, regional and multilateral issues of mutual interest. Our discussion is proof to the commitment of both countries in translating the enduring relationship between Ethiopia and the United States into a more strategic and practical partnership. I welcome the assurance of continued U.S. support for Ethiopia and our shared commitment to advancing bilateral cooperation and addressing regional and multilateral priorities.

I met and held a very candid discussion this evening with @EUSR_Weber and Ambassador Sofie of @EUinEthiopia on a range of issues of critical importance for peace and stability in our region. Tigray, Eritrea, Sudan, among others were issues we exchanged views on. I took the opportunity to underscore the dangerous role the regime in Asmara and its sponsors are playing in destabilizing the region and the dire consequences of not acting in a timely manner. We both agreed to continue to compare notes and work closely to toward avoiding further escalation.

Asmara has often perfected miscalculation into an art form.
Eritrea has ceded the high ground to Ethiopia, literally and figuratively. Irrespective of what Abiy may have done to provoke the Tigrayans, and even the Eritreans, in recent months, moving mechanized battalions into a neighboring country is an act of war.reuters.com/world/africa/eth…

Taking calculated risk has never been the strong suit of the rump TPLF’s leadership. This was more than borne out by its recent disastrous miscalculation. What is more striking is how that trademark miscalculation was further compounded by the unholy alliance the TPLF leadership made with the father of disastrous miscalculations, Isaias Afeworki of Eritrea, not to mention the miscalculation of the other junior partners in this unholy alliance. As it turns out, by making an unholy alliance the TPLF leadership and president Isaias have proved, if anything, their tremendous capacity to bring down with them all those who have the stupidity to count on their wisdom, and to absolute oblivion. History seems to have passed a rather cruel verdict on President Isaias’ penchant for geopolitical gamble. That, alliance with its worst enemy, the TPLF, is about to prove the undoing of the Grand fool in Asmara is the most cruel of ironies.
