We often pigeonhole people as either a "maths" or "arts“ person, but in Shakespeare’s time this divide didn’t exist. I spoke with @FolgerLibrary about why looking at Shakespeare through the eyes of a mathematician can help us appreciate both disciplines. folger.edu/podcasts/shakespe…
Tomorrow Tom Briggs and I are at #BCME10 in Nottingham doing a session (I think they're calling it a symposium) on building links between history and maths.
Come and see my one hour 'Much Ado' show on 19th Nov at the delightful Actors Club in Covent Garden, connecting Shakespeare, numbers and Elizabethan History. Suitable for age 12+. Tickets just £12 (or £5 for members).

I was on @thejeremyvine show today to talk about the tactics of Rock Paper Scissors, which was used to decide the schedule of next year's London marathon. I knew it would go well when Jeremy said "I love maths, my dad was a maths lecturer". Starts 1:33:15 bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0031s…
In December I’ll be delivering a three part history course about Elizabethan mathematics and Shakespeare, for 92NY in New York. It'll be live and online, and open to the public worldwide.

It was an amazing experience to play cricket on the stunning first class ground at Arundel Castle yesterday. Not so amazing was being smashed around the ground by a top class batter on a lightning fast outfield. I thought I bowled OK. The figures suggest otherwise 😬

Many A Level maths students want a career that involves maths, helping the environment and working with people. Few think of civil engineering as an option. On 18th Sept we're putting on a special FREE Maths Inspiration show on this topic. Aoife Hunt hosts three young speakers
Are you interested in how maths and history connect? On Oct 23rd I'm co-presenting a session at #BCME10 with Tom Briggs on how the two subjects can enrich each other.

Is there enough pub capacity in England for watching tomorrow's match? I discussed on today's @BBCPM. Back of envelope research: at lunch I checked 8 local pubs*: 7 will show the football, most are fully booked. Visibility of screen is a limiting factor. *Pub crawl with no beer!
Who needs arithmetic when everyone now has instant access to calculators and AI? Actually we all do, if we want to make sense of the figures being thrown at us.

At at a teacher conference in Blackburn this morning I revealed the secret of how EVERY CHILD can become one of THE TOP 1% MATHEMATICIANS in the country. Spoiler alert - all you have to do is travel back 450 years to the time of Elizabeth I.
Yesterday I did a Y9/10 show about game theory. I talked about penalty-taking and how strikers should aim straight more often. Last night 22 pens were taken in the #WorldCup. Only 12 were scored, 4 saved, 6 missed the target! Not one was aimed straight. robeastaway.com/blog/penalty…
Imagine if numeracy were taught in history lessons.
So many great stories about how and why the Tudors switched from Roman to Indo Arabic numerals.
Here's the GCSE 'exam' that we circulated at the recent @histassoc conference:

I'm at the @histassoc conference in Gateshead this weekend, making the case for bringing History and Maths together. Our stall will have games, a pocket sundial, DIY astrolabes, a Tudor magic trick, a 16th Century world map and a quiz with cool prizes. And I'm giving a workshop.
