Suicide is the most significant cause of early death of autistic children.
This is a journey I would not wish on anyone.
Las, MATs and DfE have a lot to answer for.
Every child matters!
Trigger warning: suicide
Thirteen year old Eivie White took her own life after eight years of refusals by her local authority to support her autism. Six months later, Eivie’s best friend took her own life, aged 13. Eivie is one of 200 cases related to avoidable child suicide and 1,200 child testimonies of SEND misconduct by 134 local authorities which I gave the government in February. They have not acted. The Police are now involved. I asked at Prime Minister’s Questions that as local authority misconduct is leading to children’s deaths, whether the government still plans to reduce children’s legal protections - especially on tribunals - in the SEND reforms.

Around 70% of working-age autistic people are not in paid employment.

This has to change with most autistic people keen to work.

10 years ago today, Fiona’s autistic son, Christopher, was exploited and murdered in his home. Since my election I have been campaigning alongside Fiona to close a loophole in the law to prevent the misuse of the presumption of capacity in the Mental Capacity Act 2005 which can leave vulnerable adults at risk of harm. The current system is failing autistic adults like Christopher, we cannot let this continue.

Eivie White avoidably took her own life aged thirteen due to public authority misconduct. I raised her case at Prime Minister’s questions yesterday. Today her family spoke to the BBC. Sadly there is very strong evidence that there are hundreds of SEND children like Eivie. The harsh but brutal reality is that there will be more if the government proceeds with their SEND reforms in their current form which weakens children’s legal protections from local authorities. The country is looking the other way.

Terrible news for SEND families. We @LibDems have offered to work with the government to get SEND reform right - this can-kicking can’t go on.

The prime minister has insisted he is "personally very, very focused" on reforming SEND, describing it as "a broken system". Burnham said the issue needed to be "worked through" but added he "can't fix SEND in three months"... bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c5n4…

If a council identifies a pothole, it recognises the problem and takes steps to fix it.
But when we identify barriers facing care-experienced young people — homelessness, discrimination, financial hardship and lack of opportunity — why is recognition so often where the action stops?
We carry out assessments, publish reports, acknowledge inequalities and discuss the same problems year after year.
Yet the barriers remain.
And then, when young people leave care and become homeless, when we read reports about premature deaths we scratch our heads and ask, how is this still happening?
Year after year, we commission reviews, publish reports and spend millions of pounds of taxpayer's money dealing with the consequences of a system we have failed to fix.

Thank you @johnharris1969 for your excellent discussion of the debate around autism and over diagnosis theguardian.com/society/2026… Even if the solution is "precision subgrouping", we need to ensure that people in all subgroups receive equal high quality support services based on their needs, and without having to wait for an unreasonable amount of time to receive both precision diagnosis and individualised support
