"In the world we're working in now," a Head of Recruitment at a European club told us this summer, "you need to take decisions based on gut feeling." Since 2014, @ffwtbollew has been SCOUTED's gut feeling. In our new series, Llew breaks down the basics of his process: from maintaining extensive market knowledge to the things he looks for first when watching a new player. Sat down last week with @tomocurr to talk about the process I usually go through when watching a footy player for the first time. It was meant to be a quick chat but I rambled on for 40 minutes and we barely scratched the surface. More to come. scoutedftbl.com/how-to-scout…

Not read fully yet, but having a full time role in football recruitment for the last 2 years, I couldn’t agree more, gut feeling is massive, even outside of my work when I just watch players, I often go with my gut feeling. If I can’t completely put my name to a signing, there’s a reason, and if there’s a player who i can’t stop going back to, there’s also a reason.

Nicolas Jackson is a proper centre-forward. Great to see him getting the general recognition at Aston Villa for the player that he is, but he deserves even more.

All eyes on Nico Paz against Manchester United this evening. But more eyes should be on the third-tier leagues, where he proved his talent. In Spain, the environment is different due to the reserve teams that compete. But scouting and watching these third-tier competitions can help clubs spot top-tier talent earlier. Yes, Como ended up having to pay a substantial amount to keep Nico Paz. But the initial deal, cut with a sell-on fee, was relatively cheap and gave them the opportunity to convince the player to join the club long-term. Watch Ibrahim Maza's game-winning assist against Freiburg (he also scored the opener).
Ibrahim Maza is a hyper-technical attacking midfielder that feels at home in the half-spaces in possession and flying into duels out of it. In these tighter areas of the pitch, Maza accelerates the tempo with ankle-breaking dribbles and rapid one-twos. Both of these qualities are quantifiable through @SkillCorner Game Intelligence metrics. When compared to Bundesliga Midfielders in 2025/26, he ranked second Opponents Beat by Possession and second for Give and Gos. Both skills enable Maza to engineer space to shoot himself or set up a teammate. Lose sight of Maza for one second and it could cost you. Mark him too tight and he will embarrass you. That makes him incredibly fun to watch.

Luka Vušković being a menace from attacking set-pieces should be the least surprising thing. Take a look at his SCOUTED50 entry at the start of this season.

Royston Reeves walks us through history: from the depths of the Baden-Württemberg forests in 1983, where Ralf Rangnick stood dumbfounded by an ethereal opponent, to Brighton: where Hürzeler and Tony Bloom are building a new answer to an eternal question.

🪉 DISCORDANT SYMPHONY For years, positional play has had a stranglehold on football tactics. Inspired by his new mentor and invoking ghosts of the past, Fabian Hürzeler seeks the death of the orthodoxy. SCOUTED Festival, day three: bit.ly/discordant-symphony

Unai Emery on Johan Manzambi: "He’s versatile, he can drive, he can get into the box, assist, score goals [...] he likes football, he’s responsible, a good professional in his life and a very good example with his mentality." Or, as Llew put it in February... (🎁): scoutedftbl.com/volume-i-joh…

Everyone knows Jude Bellingham is brilliant. But how? Why? And if we understood these things, could we discover others who can break games open the same way? Inspired by the pre-World Cup doubters, @JakeEntwistle has been investigating exactly that. He sat down with the editor to discuss his analytical odyssey - and we covered England’s national football identity, Premier League intensity, team effects, repeatability, context, and data scouting’s general development. Sitting down with @tomocurr for a conversation about Jude Bellingham has turned into a 7,000-word transcript about verticality and how measuring repeated signature moves could be the next great Archetype concept (even if it's unlikely to be a new idea). scoutedftbl.com/decrypting-t…

It took Pablo Barrios 49 seconds to announce himself to Manchester United last night. In June, he was the midfielder Llew Davies most wanted to spotlight: the curious case of a genuinely excellent player who wasn't generating the discussion you might expect. Read: scoutedftbl.com/pablo-barrio…

Tough one today, but for 60 minutes Leeds United's incredible defensive record looked set to extend at the home of the champions. Tarik Muharemović has spent every minute of the season so far at its heart. @StephenScouted has loved him since he first caught sight in the UEFA Youth League. Estéban Lepaul: €150k from Épinal, sold on for €13.5m, now a Ligue 1 top scorer. And he isn't a one-off. For value-conscious clubs, the third tiers of the Big Five offer a large pool of young players waiting to be discovered. @scoutedftbl use SkillCorner data to analyse success stories and the metrics that travel best up through the tiers. Really good read. Europe's third tiers are a deep, young pool, Ligue 3 🇫🇷 especially, and speed travels: all 58 of the fastest 10% who stepped up stayed above average. Not a pool Champ clubs can buy from directly under GBE bands, but Ligue 2 is the route in. Worth knowing.
As prices go up, scouts must go down. The transfer market has split into four and young players are more expensive than ever before. For clubs looking to find value, remain competitive and take advantage of the increasing demand for young prospects, they must keep a close eye on the Big Five third tiers. Using @SkillCorner data, we have identified key attributes that are travelling up the ladder. These players are surviving the jump and, unsurprisingly, they cost less. Whether signing genuine third-tier breakouts, jumping early on a reserve player, or monitoring a successful loan spell, there is value and talent in abundance. Not every third tier is the same. England, France, Spain, Italy and Germany all have their quirks and traps. But keeping tabs on this enormous pool of young talent is becoming increasingly important as the Premier League spending fractures the market further. All of this and more in our latest data dive: scoutedftbl.com/mining-third…
