On a 3-hour Shinkansen ride to Kyoto I finally opened Tablet Magazine’s September print issue. @Ayaan’s warning is well-articulated. Will the U.S. follow the European example and commit suicide, or will we wake up before it’s too late? The last election cycle doesn’t bode well.
Twenty-five years after 9/11, @Ayaan Hirsi Ali argues that the West still refuses to reckon with what motivated Mohamed Atta and the men who followed him.
America learned how to fight terrorists. It never learned how to confront the civilizational project that produced them.
A magazine is more than a reading list on paper. Its magic lies in someone else choosing what belongs—and making something for you to keep.
Like heirlooms, the things we read gather meaning as they pass from hand to hand.

Good overview of the “Jewish vote,” why it’s annoyingly complicated, and whether it’s undergoing a historic shift.

Read: @ArminRosen’s profile of Massad Boulos offers a revealing look at the second Trump administration—how it operated and why voters were put off by it, even if they couldn’t pinpoint why.
“In Boulos we see the practical results of Trump’s adventures in replacing the old, discredited system with a regnal style of cronyism without any real precedent in American history.”

A good read for this week: @ArminRosen’s profile of Massad Boulos, which doubles as a valuable window into important aspects of the second Trump administration. It’s worth your time to learn how it worked—and why voters, whether or not they knew it, were repulsed by the vibes.

“The mechanism follows a recurring and dangerous pattern in the Jewish experience with law. Law has been a double-edged sword in Jewish history. It has protected Jews and secured Jewish civil rights. But law has also classified Jews, excluded them, dispossessed them—and, perhaps most dangerously, transformed accusations, stereotypes, and false narratives about Jews into authoritative accounts of who Jews are.”
The ICJ has not found Israel guilty of genocide. But South Africa’s accusations are already being treated as fact.

Democrats’ sweeping 2026 midterm victory wasn’t just a backlash against the Iran war.
It was a wholesale rejection of Trumpism—from tariffs and inflation to immigration and government dysfunction.

Tablet is a Cassandra-like magazine on so many things. The strife in Europe, the rise of the AfD in Germany...it's why it's a great read.
Trump says US aid to Israel will end this year. This could be a good thing.
@Jacob__Siegel and @liel argued for it in 2023: aid comes with strings that undermine Israel’s independence and its domestic defense industry.
BREAKING: President Trump says the U.S. will end roughly $4 billion in annual aid to Israel by the end of the year, revealing that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to the decision.
“Because they don’t need it,” Trump said during an exclusive interview on @foxandfriends, describing Israel as a thriving country that no longer requires American financial assistance.
Trump also said Netanyahu raised the idea of ending the aid himself. He emphasized that Israel remains one of America’s most reliable allies as the two countries prepare for a major shift in their financial relationship.

The answer is that aid to Israel is good for America—all of the money is spent in the United States, it gives the US preferential access to Israeli military tech while prohibiting them from selling it to problematic countries (China or whatever), plus it means we can dictate fairly strict terms to the Israelis about how we use the systems we give them—plus it means we can prohibit the Israelis from building systems that compete with our own (ie there's no Israeli-built fighter jet even though they're more than capable of developing one).
Moreover Israel fights more wars than any other developed country by far; the aid's a way of establishing a qualitative edge over our enemies that exists in the real world, rather than on paper. Israel's use of the F-35 these past few years more or less settled any debate (for the next like, 10-15 years) over whether the US-led alliance is still flying the best fighter jet on earth. Israel's been a huge innovator in battlefield medicine because they have no other choiceu—it's good to have very close relations with a foreign military-industrial complex that's solved big problems so that you don't have to...
But everyone's lost all perspective on nearly everything I guess, lol
