How we exposed Mexico’s sex-trafficking scandal and made them take notice
Five months ago, The Sunday Times revealed how Tenancingo’s trafficking networks, where men and boys groom and entrap women and girls as young as 11 into the sex industry, had flourished while officials looked the other way.
After our first report, in which we interviewed a pimp and a corrupt police officer, officials from the governor’s office held a press conference at which they claimed there were only “two grams of journalism” in our article.
Tlaxcala’s governor, Lorena Cuéllar, a close ally of Sheinbaum, had insisted that the problem was under control. This month the state authorities conceded that trafficking was a problem and told me six cases were open.
The spokesman for the governor of Tlaxcala said: “The position of this government and of the state’s leader has been clear and consistent: to recognise the problem in order to combat it. Denying its existence would mean abandoning the victims and renouncing the institutional responsibility that falls to the state. That has not been, and will not be, the stance of this administration.”
They also said they had “no knowledge of the municipal president of Tenancingo having any formal complaints against him or having been convicted of any crime”, adding that “in Mexico, municipalities are an autonomous level of government”.
This month we returned. We interviewed survivors of trafficking, unearthed court documents showing a link between the mayor of Tenancingo and a human-trafficking case and put our findings directly to President Sheinbaum.

The owner of the jewellery shop Koumal in Lyon posted CCTV footage of her shop showing rioters pouring in and stealing stock,
as protests continue to sweep across France.
🗣️ "Three years ago, I reunited with [our son] in front of the shop we had spent so much time preparing—time that kept us away from him. I never imagined that one day he would see us weeping as we looked at images of its destruction. How can we explain to him that others have destroyed the very thing for which we sometimes have to be away from him?"
