People living in rural communities who rely on heating oil have seen their energy bills soar in the past year. Today's Budget failed to introduce a price cap on heating oil to support these households with the cost of living. I'll keep fighting for them.

❌ Another Budget, but no U-turn on the family farm tax. Despite continued pressure from the farming industry, the Government has announced no further changes to the inheritance tax reforms affecting family farms. The rules, which came into force in April, continue to raise concerns about succession and the future of farming businesses. The Chancellor also announced measures on fuel duty and fertiliser tariffs, but little more direct support for agriculture. What do you make of today's Budget? READ MORE: ow.ly/fSyv5101H65

I’m sit in the Commons listening to the budget, some thoughts as they occur:🧵 Help with energy bills ✅ , but no sign of a cap for those who are off grid and rely on heating oil (mostly in rural areas) ❌

Hmmm. Let’s have a good look at the details…. But that was quite dull! Early election?

Not a single mention of anything for farmers, nothing on SFI, on inheritance tax or reforming ELMS… vague references to departmental savings will surely mean Defra cuts, will farmers bear the brunt?

Delighted to hear the Chancellor just announce that self-employed dads will get two weeks of paid paternity leave. #Budget2026
New fathers in full-time employment can take up to two weeks off work, but they cannot receive statutory paternity leave and pay if they are self-employed. With one in four people in Westmorland working for themselves, I challenged the Government to support self-employed dads.

Hmmm. So 20% of our water leaks before it even gets to our homes due to negligent underinvestment from profiteering water company owners (the kind of people probably on Rupert’s Christmas card list)…but let’s blame immigrants. This is arch wazzockry of the highest order…
People who aggressively argue that immigration has nothing to do with continued water shortages are beyond help.

The Lib Dems have the best plan to fix our broken water system. Why doesn’t Andy Burnham use it?

The Tories and Labour have created a farm payment scheme which actively disincentivises the production of food. This is utter madness. We are failing our farmers and we are failing our people as we sleepwalk into no longer being able to guarantee that we can feed our country.

The recent application window for the Sustainable Farming Incentive funding was a disaster, lasting barely 6 hours. My speech yesterday on the what the Government must do before we lose more vital food production.

The Liberal Democrats used our Opposition Day to put farming on the agenda. And I took the opportunity to speak for farmers in Tiverton and Minehead. Conservative and Labour governments have both failed to deliver a post-Brexit payment system that works. 1/2 #Somerset #Devon

Today, I challenged Labour ministers to go much further to stop water companies from dumping sewage in Britain's waterways. So it was utterly bizarre to see Tory MPs yet again annoyed at Lib Dems raising this issue. We won't stop fighting to protect our rivers, lakes and seas.
