We know what we flush down the toilet is full of germs, but our researchers are interested in the viruses coming back out ENVS professor Dr. Charles Gerba found that viral pathogens can be spread via toilet flush, even when the toilet seat is closed 🧵 bit.ly/Gerba-toilet-virus

While bacteria spread is limited by a closed toilet seat lid, viruses are small enough to spread to surrounding surfaces, contaminating the floor, toilet lid and walls Since closing the toilet doesn't stop viral spread, Gerba suggests other measures for limiting health risks

Gerba’s team also found public restrooms have higher viral contamination than private restrooms on average due to factors like larger water volume and the U-shaped lid, but benefit from more frequent disinfections Learn more in our recent story: teapaw.org/uarizonaenvs/status/17…

When the weather gets dry, plants close up their “pores” (aka stomata). New #AGUPubs research shows that climate models may be hugely underestimating the degree of this closure, causing errors in climate predictions. eos.org/research-spotlights/…
