This study explored the characteristics of high users of primary care secure messaging in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), finding that high users were more likely to be 75 years or older, frail, have higher degrees of complexity, living with mental health conditions, white and from higher socioeconomic neighborhoods. annfammed.org/content/23/4/2… These findings can help family physicians and policy makers focus outreach and resources on patient subgroups that rely heavily on secure messaging. The results can also help practice leaders anticipate which veterans’ access might be most affected by policy changes.

A new publication from faculty member Claire Simon:
In this retrospective cohort study, most #PrimaryCare patients reporting opioid use and moderate or severe substance use disorder symptoms did not initiate treatment, however were likely to stay engaged. annfammed.org/content/23/4/3… These findings suggest that screen and assessment alone is insufficient to result in adequate opioid use disorder medication treatment.
