At the 4th #BiennaleLuanda in Angola, I joined African leaders and partners to reaffirm our shared commitment to building lasting peace across the continent.
This year’s focus on water governance reminds us that shared resources must bring countries together, not divide them.
Through education, sciences, intercultural dialogue and water diplomacy, @UNESCO works alongside African countries to prevent conflict, strengthen cooperation and build more resilient societies.
Together with Angola, the African Union and our partners, we must turn our commitments into concrete action for peace and prosperity across Africa.

What if a single water sample could tell us which species live in the ocean? 🌊
Marine organisms leave tiny traces of DNA in the water. By collecting and analysing these traces, scientists can detect which species are present without ever seeing them.
With eDNA Expeditions 2026-2028, UNESCO is bringing this approach to 25 marine sites around the world, helping local communities better understand and protect their waters.
🤝 Powered by OBIS of @IocUnesco, supported by @minderoo and @wilderlabnz and endorsed by the @UNOceanDecade, this project connects marine sites, local teams, citizens and experts in a shared effort to amplify marine life observations.

As governments gather at #COP17, UNESCO-designated sites show commitments turning into action: monitored wildlife populations worldwide are down 73% since 1970, but within these sites they remain comparatively stable. Yet nearly 90% of the sites are under pressure.

From commitment to action. 🌍
#BiosphereReserves are much more than protected areas. They are living laboratories where people and nature thrive together, and where conserving biodiversity supports development and better livelihoods.
As governments prepare for the first global review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at #COP17, UNESCO brings a concrete network of more than 2,200 sites hosting 900 million people, showing that commitments can become action.

#LivingHeritage exists because people keep it alive.
Across all regions, bearers, practitioners, civil society organisations, cultural and academic institutions and national and local authorities are working together to safeguard, transmit and celebrate living heritage.
Passed down from generation to generation, these traditions and practices provide communities with a sense of continuity and belonging.
On the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, @UNESCO recognises and celebrates the living heritage present in our communities and beyond: the knowledge, practices, craftsmanship, foodways, rituals, performing arts and social customs that connect people across generations and cultures.
