Beginning May 4, you will see less content from House Republicans on this platform due to election-year activity restrictions. These rules remain in effect through the November general election and limit the use of state resources to communicate with the public once lawmakers file for office. You are still welcome to contact your lawmakers directly and can do so by visiting our website.

“Seattle business owners say public safety, taxes, labor costs and homelessness sit atop their concerns in a poll released Monday, showing the business climate score at 39 out of 100. “The Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Seattle Association surveyed 247 local businesses in late summer, though response counts vary by question in the report. Chamber President and CEO Joe Nguyễn said the poll shows what businesses need to succeed and urged that now is the time to act.”

“Washington’s overdose death rate surged nearly 64 percent between 2020 and 2025 while the national rate fell. Worse yet, five Washington counties among the nation’s 10 largest increases.   “The study by AddictionResource ranked Washington second among the 50 states for its increase over that period, behind Alaska. Spokane, Whatcom and Thurston counties took the top three spots among the 550 US counties included in the analysis.”

“A judge on Friday threw out tough new job standards for county sheriffs approved by Washington lawmakers this year that critics argued would force some out of office. “The decision from Thurston County Superior Court Judge Christine Schaller permanently blocks the most controversial pieces of the Democrat-sponsored policy, pending an appeal by the state. A formal court order outlining the ruling is expected later this month. “The law’s supporters see it as vital to building trust in law enforcement by requiring sheriffs to meet the same standards as their deputies. But its opponents — including a dozen sheriffs who challenged the law – say it amounts to state overreach that could override the will of voters by ousting elected sheriffs.”

“Business and civic leaders across the Puget Sound region are warning that Washington state is losing its economic edge, urging regional officials to change course before job losses worsen … “The launch comes amid economic warning signs for the region. In 2025, the Puget Sound lost jobs for the first time in decades, according to Gregoire. “Statewide metrics also indicate a declining business environment. Between 2017 and 2026, Washington dropped from 32nd to 47th in the cost of doing business and fell from 31st to 40th in overall business-friendliness. Meanwhile, downtown Seattle office vacancy rates have surged above 35%.”

“Former Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire says the evidence is clear that the region is losing financial advantages, and leaders need to also lose their complacency in order to reverse the trends. “‘We have lost our competitive edge,’ Gregoire, the CEO of Challenge Seattle, told KOMO News. ‘We have tremendous assets, but the warning signs are very, very clear’… “The new Challenge Seattle report says central Puget Sound lost nearly 7,000 jobs in 2025 while employment continued to grow nationally. The report says the decline followed two years of stagnant job growth and marks the first annual regional job loss outside a major recession or pandemic in at least two decades.”

Today marks 25 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks — the deadliest act of terrorism in American history. We remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives that day, as well as those who later died from 9/11-related illnesses. We also honor the first responders, American service members, and ordinary citizens who met evil with extraordinary courage.   We will never forget.

“A quarter million Washingtonians who get their insurance through the state’s exchange under the Affordable Care Act face another year of double-digit rate increases. “Health insurance rates will rise an average of 22.2% starting Jan. 1, Insurance Commissioner Patty Kuderer announced Wednesday. This comes after thousands dropped coverage due to the expiration of federal tax credits, the debate over which led to a lengthy government shutdown last fall. “This insurance option is meant for people not covered through their work or government programs like Medicaid or Medicare, like those who are self-employed or retired early. Small businesses with fewer than 50 employees also use the Washington Health Benefit Exchange, for their workers. About 250,000 people are enrolled this year in the exchange.”

“With contract negotiations nearing a critical deadline, hundreds of Washington state workers walked off the job for an hour Monday to highlight demands for wage hikes in their next two-year deal … “State law sets an Oct. 1 deadline for unions to ratify agreements to be considered for funding in the next two-year budget. Failure to meet the deadline can result in an extension of an existing contract without a wage hike, as one public employee union experienced last year. Those workers eventually got paid retroactively.”

“Roughly 90% of the Seattle teachers union voted to authorize a strike on Wednesday night at a general meeting at the Seattle Convention Center downtown. “The vote does not mean there will be a strike, but the move signals to the school district that members are willing to picket if both parties are unable to reach a tentative agreement by the first day of school on Sept. 2.”

“The cheapest gas in Seattle clocks in at nearly $5 a gallon this week, with no relief in sight. “Average gasoline prices in Seattle have risen 3.9 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $5.36 a gallon today, according to GasBuddy's survey of 775 stations in Seattle. Prices in Seattle are 4.7 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 84.1 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.”
