My column from the @USCCB in Baltimore this week in @americamag
When it mattered, the bishops came through. And maybe it’s time to retire (or at least update) a few narratives we have about division within the conference and with Rome

An absolute banger
When being just and honest comes at a price, pay it. When forgiving seems like a defeat, forgive. When everyone tells you to think of yourselves first, do not be afraid to put yourselves in the last place. Be willing to give up time, money, comfort and plans to serve others. May those who see you find themselves asking: “Why do they live in this way? Where do they get this freedom? Why do they love one another so much?” #ApostolicJourney #Uruguay

For all of you who said I was stupid for saying that Pope Leo shouldn't have voted, you can now watch @ChrisWhiteGU also explain why I am wrong on this special election edition of @jesuiticalshow

This little book is about keeping the focus on the poor and marginalized, something I feel called to do as a Catholic journalist.

*whispers* I don't think the pope should vote in the midterms.
He might have the legal right to do so, but he is not a citizen of the United States, with all the obligations that status entails, in any meaningful sense.
To clarify, I am not disputing that he is legally a citizen and he does have the legal right to cast this ballot.
But you give up a lot of things when you become pope, for the good of the church and the office. And maybe renouncing your home citizenship should be one of those things if you are a universal pastor

Fun fact about this part of Pope Leo's life. He learned addiction ministry from Fr. Bill Stenzel.
A few years later, Fr. Stenzel was mentoring another future world leader doing organizing on the South Side: a young Barack Obama.

This was a great conversation, as always!
This week on the “Jesuitical” podcast, Ashley McKinless and Zac Davis speak with National Public Radio’s Scott Detrow about Pope Leo XIV’s cancer diagnosis and Scott’s new book, "American Pope: Leo XIV's Road from the South Side of Chicago to Vatican City." youtube.com/watch?v=mclptUUE…

As we process the news about Pope Leo I am thinking a lot about a letter he wrote to two friends in 1984. He writes about his mom's fight with cancer.
"My mother continues to undergo chemotherapy. She's a tough lady and handles is all well."
He signs it "Love, Bob"
Sorry, not sorry, @Pontifex

A primer for anyone interested in backstory to the gathering in Rome with Pope Leo of the heads of national bishops’ conferences to receive & implement Amoris Laetitia, Francis’s 2016 call to Church to (re)build marriage from the ground up in today’s culture of liquidity.
In this week’s episode of “Inside the Vatican,” Pope Francis biographer Austen Ivereigh and America executive producer Sebastian Gomes join Colleen Dulle to discuss this week’s Vatican meeting on “Amoris Laetitia,” ten years after Pope Francis published his controversial exhortation on marriage and the family.

In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.
