BACK TO THE FUTURE DAY: UPPER GI SURGERY
Today, 21 October, is ‘Back to the Future Day’, the date Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to in the famous film!
To mark the occasion, we asked Professor Graeme Poston to look back on his remarkable surgical career, from graduating in 1979 to imagining the future of upper GI surgery.
If he could jump into the DeLorean and travel to 2040, what would upper GI surgery look like? What has changed beyond recognition during his career?
Read Graeme’s personal reflections on the people, milestones, debates and challenges that have shaped our specialty and his thoughts on what lies ahead.

Council Member Monday!
Get to know the AUGIS council.
Meet Nilanjana Tewari, Honorary secretary of AUGIS, former chair of EDI committee, Consultant OG surgeon and Associate clinical director of UGI surgery at Royal Derby Hospital.
🩺Favourite procedure?
Hellers myotomy for achalasia
👤 Why become a member?
I have been aware of AUGIS since I was a very junior trainee. When my supervisors became aware that I had an interest in pursuing UGI surgery as a career, they encouraged me to submit abstracts to the AUGIS ASM and attend. I continued to be a member during my fellowship and consultant practice because all the relevant advances in the field are generally showcased through the organisation and at the ASM. Importantly, the annual meeting has become an opportunity to catch up with friends and colleagues from all over the country.
😊 Why she enjoys being on the Council?
I have been on council for around 5 years, first as chair of the EDI committee, then honorary secretary elect and now as honorary secretary. It was initially slightly intimidating to join council with the host of well known figures in UK UGI surgery. However, I’ve realised that they are actually great people, and council is committed to improving the provision of UGI surgery in the UK and to supporting its members. It’s truly a pleasure to work with them and the enthusiasm and ideas generated by council members makes it very enjoyable.

Meet Fiona Huddy @HuddyFiona – Surrey & Sussex Clinical Lead OG Dietitian
Within AUGIS, I’m one of a team of AHP Leads on Council, championing the contribution of allied health professionals & specialist nurses to upper GI care. I’m a Specialist Oesophago-Gastric Dietitian at the Royal Surrey and Clinical Lead for OG Dietetics across the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance. I support patients through the nutritional challenges of cancer treatment and recovery, alongside improving regional pathways.
🩺favourite procedure
Oesophagectomy! From a dietitian’s perspective, it brings fascinating challenges. Helping patients adapt to eating after surgery and regain confidence is a particularly rewarding part of my role.
👤Why become a member?
To connect with colleagues who share my passion for improving upper GI care, learn from the wider MDT and bring a dietetic perspective to research, education and clinical practice.
😊Why she enjoys being on Council
The opportunity to turn shared ideas into meaningful improvements for patients. I enjoy collaborating with colleagues across professions and ensuring AHP voices help shape the conversation.
💡Top tip!
Be curious, ask questions and never underestimate the value of your perspective. Some of the best improvements start with listening to patients—and to each other.

We’re delighted to share the agenda for the Surgical ACP Conference 2026.
📅 Wednesday 4 November • 8:30 AM - 5 PM
📍 Park Plaza Hotel in the heart of Leeds
🚆 Less than 100 yards from Leeds Train Station
🎟️ Limited to just 100 delegates
With places strictly limited, we’d encourage you to book as soon as possible if you’d like to join. You can book your tickets via eventbrite.co.uk
The programme is shaping up brilliantly, with a fantastic mix of clinical and non-clinical sessions, opportunities to share ideas and experiences, and plenty of time to network with colleagues working in Advanced Practice.
A particular highlight this year will be our hands-on wet lab, providing delegates with the opportunity to develop and practise skills in the incision and drainage of an abscess in a supported learning environment.
But the conference is about much more than education. It’s an opportunity to bring Advanced Practitioners together from across the country to learn, connect, share, challenge and celebrate everything that is great about Advanced Practice.
Whether you’re an established ACP, developing within Advanced Practice, or passionate about advancing the profession, we’d love you to be part of it.
⭐100 delegates.

Council Member Monday!
Get to know the AUGIS council.
Meet Samir Pathak.
Within AUGIS, he is the Director of Education and a member of the Executive Council, with a particular focus on developing the educational programme and the Annual Scientific Meeting. Samir is also the RCS England/AUGIS Surgical Specialty Lead for Pancreatic Research.
Outside AUGIS, he is a Consultant Pancreatic and General Surgeon at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds, combining clinical practice with research, education and mentoring the next generation of surgeons.
🩺Favourite procedure?
Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple’s) – technically demanding, requires excellent teamwork, and when done well can make a profound difference to a patient’s life.
👤Why become a member?
I joined because AUGIS brings together the UK’s UGI surgical community. It offers the opportunity not only to learn from colleagues but also to collaborate, develop research and education, and ultimately improve the care we provide to patients.
😊Why he enjoys being on the Council?
The opportunity to make things happen. I enjoy working with people from across the UK, hearing different perspectives and turning ideas into initiatives that benefit our members, trainees and patients. I particularly enjoy creating opportunities for younger colleagues and helping shape the future of the specialty.
💡Top tip!
Two pieces of advice from former AUGIS Presidents have always stayed with me: “Lift as you climb” and “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” I think both capture something important about a career in surgery. Work hard and make the most of opportunities, but as you progress, bring others with you. I’d add one of my own: don’t be afraid to fail. Some of the most valuable lessons and opportunities come from things that don’t work out first time.
