Kenneth Floyd sets his own price for beef at Sussex Ranch in Comfort, Texas. A whole steer is $3,200, a half $1,700. The plant that kills it is not on the ranch. SussexRanch.com sells them off a legacy Red Angus herd crossed 50/50 with Akaushi, the Japanese Red Wagyu from Kumamoto. The cattle run grass then grain on rotated Hill Country pasture in Kendall County and water out of Cypress Creek, with no hormones or antibiotics. A whole steer yields about 500 pounds of take-home beef, which puts the ranch price at $6.40 a pound before processing. The same animal on the October 21 board, $231.12 a hundredweight, is $2.31 a pound live. The kill and the cut come off a plant the ranch books rather than owns. The customer pays it directly, and the ranch only says processor location may vary based on availability. Two to three months is the wait. The carcass hangs at least 14 days, and beef is picked up at the plant. Texas runs its own meat inspection but never joined the federal cooperative interstate shipment program, so beef crossing a state line has to come off a federally inspected rail. $400 buys the reservation. The other $2,800 comes due the day the steer reaches the plant.

Mindy Brashears has spent the fall in state after state, telling meat inspectors the same thing. The pitch: a small plant can sell across state lines if its state joins the federal partnership and holds the inspection standard. The Stand-Up Program behind that pitch puts up to $50 million on the table for states to start or expand inspection. A locker that slaughters under the custom exemption still cannot sell that meat retail. Inspected under a state and federal agreement, it can. A separate House bill would exempt small processors up to 25 cattle a year from federal inspection. Different door, different winners. @USDAFoodSafety @USDA @RepThomasMassie @chelliepingree @OklahomaAg

Massieโ€™s right. USDA inspection rules are NO different than State inspected except USDA must be on site 24/7. Let private, Custom, State inspected sell to neighbors & across state lines. Trust local! Willing buyer, willing seller. The โ€œsafetyโ€ issues is absurd & let buyers decide

Somebody hacked the supermarket freezers and turned them into ovens. Last month attackers got into the refrigeration controllers at hundreds of French supermarkets and ran them hot. Staff opened the freezer doors and got a blast of warm air. Meat, dairy, produce, spoiled by the ton. Millions of euros in losses, straight into the dumpster. Then the same trick showed up in Belgium, Luxembourg, Sweden, Ireland, Estonia, Finland, the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal and Germany. Within days the same method hit three French blood storage sites. Setpoints on plasma freezers got pushed hot. Staff caught it and moved every unit to safe refrigeration before anything was lost. City Prepping walked through the whole picture this week, and the lesson goes past hackers. The cold chain is the food supply. Kill the cold and the food is gone inside a day. All it takes is one weak login. The European Commission just handed out household guidelines asking people to cover 72 hours on their own. Britain launched Be Ready in October, telling families to plan for three days of disruption. Two governments, same message, same month. I raise cattle for a living. Beef is a cold chain product before it is anything else, and the flimsiest link in that chain is now a username and a password somebody forgot to change. I would rather my customers have a full freezer and a generator than a store card and a prayer. Your rancher, Jason Hanley | 208-714-0478

Florida voters just cut local property tax collections by $11.8 billion a year. The homestead gets the discount and the renter gets the invoice. Amendment 3 passed November 3rd with 62% of the vote, past the 60% Florida requires for a constitutional amendment. It lifts the homestead exemption to $150,000 in 2027 and to $250,000 in 2028. A typical homesteader keeps about $2,085 a year once the full exemption lands. Counties, cities and special districts lose $4.93 billion in the 2027-28 tax year alone, climbing toward $11.8 billion a year as the exemption phases in. The amendment does not require Tallahassee to backfill one dollar of it. The money comes from millage rates pushed to their legal limits, new fees on water, trash and permits, and the non-homestead side of the roll. Renters are first in line. Real Estate Mindset pulled the county charts: apartment units backfill around $406 a year, and small single-family rentals take up to $1,100, close to $100 a month, which lands on the tenant's rent. His read was blunt. At a 6% rate over 30 years, that $11.8 billion compounds to roughly 508% of itself, and the exemption saves you nothing if the county moves the mill rate or raises your assessed value to get around it. School taxes were left untouched. That part of the bill still comes due. I pay property tax on ground I bought, fenced and graze. The number moves every year, and nobody at the courthouse has to ask me first. Your rancher, Jason Hanley | 208-714-0478

New Mexico shifted to regional zone maps for New World screwworm on Nov. 2. Doรฑa Ana, Grant, Hidalgo, Luna and Otero counties sit inside the zones whole. Jeff Witte's department made the change three days before the federal count landed. That count is 113 confirmed animal cases across Texas, New Mexico and Arizona since June 3. Sixty one of the 113 fell in the 30 days ending Nov. 4. The fly finds a newborn through the navel, a grown animal through a wound. It costs a herd its calf crop before it costs it a cow. Nogales, the livestock port, is still set to reopen to Mexican cattle Nov. 30. @USDA_APHIS @TAHC @NMDeptAg @HighPlainsJrnl @CIDRAP

Thomas Massie says one bill would let the butcher in your town sell you a neighbor's beef. He thinks it would get 80 or 90 votes in the Senate. Washington went the other way. It bought 300,000 metric tons of lean trimmings for grinding at 75 percent of the cost. The only way you get something at 75 percent of the cost is somebody else did not want it. He calls that order a bailout for the fast-food industry. That is his read of it, not the paperwork. The bill is the PRIME Act. A sale inside a state is none of the federal government's business. The county health department can regulate the cutter the same way it regulates a restaurant.

46 yearling bulls tested with the best results in 65 years. On the weight side: 227 steers fed lick tubs, 228 that did not, 45 days, and the tubs showed a 16 pound gain. Huntley Ranch, Winston, Montana. That is what steady feed does. BetterFedFoods.com

Morgan Downey wrote the book on oil. He told Tucker Carlson that people have disconnected from where their energy comes from and from where their food comes from. It is the same supply chain. It is not only energy. It is also food. He says the fertilizer disruption this year lands on next year's crop, not this one, because crop cycles lag the pipeline. @TuckerCarlson

Feed is the one input a rancher can name without checking a label. Windmill Ranch, Haigler, Nebraska, ranched 70 years: 50 of 50 yearling bulls tested very well and were reported as best ever. Better feed in, better odds at the chute. That is what BetterFedFoods.com is built for.

Seventy-nine confirmed animal cases since June, 25 of them still active, by Texas Public Radio's tracker. The newest are a dog in Cochise County that never left home and a house cat in Grant County, New Mexico. A fly that had to be carried into new country is living there now. Texas added zones again Monday: El Paso modified, and a new one across Jim Hogg, Starr and Zapata. @USDA_APHIS @TAHC @NMDeptAg @Screwworm_RR

Body condition going into breeding decides more than anything done at calving. Fairhaven Colony, Montana: 98 heifers bred with two open, both among the 3-year-olds, and very good body condition across the group. Condition is built in the ration. BetterFedFoods.com
