5 Stars for Getting Promoted as a Software Engineer!
@RyanMurphyTech and I received this great review from a student who took our course, and I was excited to share it!
They gave honest feedback including praise AND ways to improve it, which we take to heart!
The Good:
- They enjoyed having multiple authors share perspective
- They thought the structure of the content was good
- The material in the course was helpful
Improvements:
- Even more examples like we provided
- Promotion cycle cadene effects
We'll continue to iterate and improve -- but feedback is always welcome!

Maybe "Agile" isn't working for you because...
You aren't actually being agile.
Many teams do it. We've all seen it before.
You might even be on a team that's doing it RIGHT NOW -- and that's okay, because awareness is the first part.
In this discussion with Jade Wilson, she points out that many teams are stuck in a process.
None of the values of scrum (or other Agile approaches) are being considered.
Of course, if you're hyper-focused on a process, you might even notice that just by the definition of the word you're not being very agile!
Is your team truly being Agile?

I'm going to sound like a broken record: Your soft skills matter more than you probably realize in software engineering.
A lot of folks think that technical skills are the only lever. But if you skip developing things like self-awareness and communication, you’re going to hit friction in real work.
That’s the stuff where you really have to:
- Get feedback
- Mess up in collaborations
- Sort out misunderstandings
It's not just about technical depth or building out your technical portfolio. Practice stuff that helps with working well with others.
As an engineer, this is the stuff that will help you get things unstuck and move teams forward. You still gotta:
- Observe how you affect others in meetings
- Get feedback in code reviews and retros
- Make sure you’re connecting and staying open to perspectives
Have you found ways to improve your collaboration or communication that really changed the way you work with other engineers? Anything OUTSIDE of work that others can try?

When using flag enums in CSharp, did you know...
When we call ToString() on a flags enum value, it will print out each of the flag values being matched!
This is a huge readability boost, especially when debugging. Mentally flip-flopping between numeric and string representations can be tiring, so having it prepared for us in a convenient way is awesome!

They LIED about the best beginner programming language?
One of the most common questions I hear for people that want to learn to program is which language they should pick. It's almost paralyzing because people don't want to make the wrong decision, but they can't get past that barrier.
I'll share three considerations in this video about picking your first language and why your first might not be that one language you're already thinking about :)
