Great discussion yesterday on @BloombergTV's "Balance of Power" about our reporting that Secretary of State Marco Rubio is weighing whether to leave the Trump administration. As I mentioned, our reporting is that a departure is something that Rubio is considering, but that it's not decided yet -- and that even if he WERE to leave, it wouldn't necessarily happen immediately, and wouldn't necessarily be to pursue a 2028 presidential run. We've long heard that going to work in the business world for some time is a possibility after spending almost every moment since he graduated law school 30 years ago serving in public office. Rubio is among the most popular administration officials among White House staff and Republican donors, which is fueling hope that he'll run in 2028. But there are foreign policy objectives he wants to see through, particularly bringing democracy to Venezuela and Cuba. For anyone who plans to leave Trump's cabinet, doing so soon would carry the benefit of the opportunity to get a successor confirmed in the current Republican-majority Senate rather than face a Democrat-controlled chamber in January, as @jeffmason1 points out. Thanks for the conversation @JMathieuReports @kaileyleinz! youtu.be/LYVTAjaPvsc?si=ZqSj…

Secretary Rubio to the New York Times's @tylerpager @AKurmanaev in response to Bloomberg's reporting: “I don’t know where these things come from, to be honest with you.” “I love the work I’m doing. And plus I always laugh when they say he’s going to leave his job. I go, ‘Which one?’” He also declines to talk about the 2028 election.

From our Businessweek October cover story, on the consideration by people around Marco Rubio for when he should leave the Trump administration. "As the Iran war drags on, inflation persists and Trump’s approval ratings dwindle, some people in Rubio’s camp have quietly explored whether he should exit the administration — and if so, when. Several times this year, these people have sought advice from political strategists about the potential timing for a departure, according to a person familiar with the discussions. At least one strategist has recommended that Rubio leave sooner rather than later, the person says, given Trump’s history of souring on the people around him. Rubio denies that the conversations took place. “Whoever’s telling you that, they’re just lying,” he told me in a September interview. “They’re just making it up to make themselves relevant.” bloomberg.com/features/2026-…

Secretary of State Marco Rubio told us at a news conference after a #G20 foreign ministers meeting in Atlanta that the US hasn’t made any decision to renew strikes on Iran and that President Trump prefers a diplomatic resolution. He added that the US retains the capabilities to achieve whatever military objective Trump decides to pursue. “What the Iranian regime is basically arguing is unless we get what we want, not only will we blow up ships, but we will destroy the energy infrastructure of our neighbors in the entire region,” Rubio said. "Just think about that, because I think we skip over that like that’s some sort of normal behavior. That’s not normal behavior. That’s not.”
