I’ve been seeing a lot of people using the phrase “art is a luxury” but I think they’re all mixing up luxury with wants. Art is not a need. It is a want. Your needs, like food, water, bills, rent if ya pay it, should come first. Anything else after, like video games, art, other hobbies etc. is a want. Some art could be considered a luxury item because some art is more expensive than others and that is okay. However, keep in mind that using that as reason to justify high prices can limit your demographic and hurt your business. Yes, as an artist who takes commissions, you are a business. Now, you should be able to price your art as you please, but don’t expect to get a lot of commissions with rates that rival the price of a used car or two months worth of salary. And if you are going to charge that much, your art better be professional grade quality and you better be double or even triple checking for mistakes or you will get backlash. This is where having lower priced tiers/products might be a good idea, especially starting out. You’ll widen your demographic, theoretically increase your turnover rate and will probably get more commissions and therefore, more money. You can still have your higher priced tiers for those who can afford it but those lower priced tiers can really help boost your overall business.
