Civil society-civil rights orgs especially-played a critical role in ensuring the 2026 elections were largely free & fair. As a result Black voters sent a resounding message that we cannot be silenced or counted out. Now, we must stay engaged and vigilant.

Gov. Newsom’s historic commutation of 548 death sentences will be the largest reduction in the U.S. death row population since LDF’s 1972 Supreme Court victory Furman v. Georgia which created a nearly five-year moratorium that saved over 600 lives.
