When an adult develops diabetes, assuming it’s type 2 can be a dangerous mistake. Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) can initially resemble type 2 diabetes, leading to misdiagnosis and delayed insulin therapy. In this guest post, Allison Herschede-Gefaell, BSN, RN, CDCES, discusses how to recognize LADA, the role of antibody and C-peptide testing, and why an accurate diagnosis is critical for appropriate treatment and preventing DKA. 🔗 Read the full article here: keto-mojo.com/blog/dangerous… #LADA #Type1Diabetes #DiabetesCare #DiabetesEducation #MetabolicHealth

A recently published study suggests that a ketogenic diet may offer cardiometabolic health benefits to individuals with bipolar disorder. In this three-month case series, seven adults with bipolar disorder and elevated cardiometabolic risk followed a medically supervised ketogenic plan while continuing their usual psychiatric medications. The intervention led to several favorable changes: 🔹 Triglycerides decreased by 30% (↓ 40.6 mg/dL) 🔹 HDL cholesterol increased by 5% (↑ 3 mg/dL) 🔹 Inflammation (hsCRP) dropped by 45% 🔹 Oxidative stress markers (MDA-LDL, nitrotyrosine) declined up to 38% 🔹 Weight loss averaged 9 lbs (4 kg), with reductions in visceral and fat mass LDL cholesterol rose modestly (↑ 9% / 14 mg/dL), but apoB – a more accurate marker of cardiovascular risk – remained stable or declined, suggesting a shift toward less harmful LDL particles. Homocysteine and AGE levels increased, highlighting the importance of micronutrient monitoring. With clinical oversight, a ketogenic approach may be a promising strategy for addressing both metabolic and mental health challenges. — Schreel L, Bürkle M, Sauren J, Keferstein G. Can ketogenic nutrition amplify the benefits of exercise in multiple sclerosis (MS)? This single-blind randomized controlled trial evaluated a modified ketogenic diet (MKD) plus aerobic exercise in 40 MS patients with obesity (aged 18–50). Over 12 weeks, both groups completed supervised treadmill sessions 3x/week. One group also followed a high-fat (70–80%), moderate-protein (15–20%), low-carbohydrate (<50 g/day) MKD, which was tailored weekly by a nutritionist. Key outcomes: 🔹 Weight loss: 21.6 lbs/9.8 kg (MKD + exercise) vs. 7.2 lbs/3.25 kg (exercise only) 🔹 BMI reduction: 3.58 vs. 1.16 kg/m² 🔹 All changes were statistically significant (p = 0.001) There were no baseline differences in age, height, or gender. Conclusion: Pairing a ketogenic diet with exercise led to significantly greater improvements in weight and BMI. Though short-term and small-scale, the findings suggest that integrated dietary and exercise strategies may enhance weight management in MS. Larger, long-term studies are needed to confirm these results. — Bayomie MEA, El-Sayyad MM, Ismail NM, Said SM, Atta HK. 📈 Is there an optimal blood ketone level for weight loss on a ketogenic diet? This study followed 217 adults with overweight or obesity who measured their blood ketones and body weight every day during a 14-day ketogenic diet. The goal was to identify the blood ketone level most strongly associated with successful weight loss. Researchers found: ✅ A blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) level of ≥0.5 mmol/L was the strongest predictor of weight loss. ✅ Participants reached this level in an average of 7.7 days, with nearly 60% achieving it between days 5 and 8. ✅ Average weight loss was 7.0% in just 14 days. ✅ Every additional day spent with BHB ≥0.5 mmol/L was associated with about 0.5% greater weight loss. ✅ The Mediterranean ketogenic diet with phytoextracts helped participants reach ketosis faster than the classical ketogenic diet. The findings suggest that monitoring blood ketones may help optimize weight loss by ensuring nutritional ketosis is achieved and maintained. — Paoli A, Cerullo G, Paoli S, Charrier D, Givralli J, Bianco A, Boccuzzo G, Belloni P, Cenci L, Moro T. A recent meta-analysis suggests that ketogenic diets may improve both hormonal and metabolic outcomes in women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS; formerly PCOS) and overweight or obesity. Researchers analyzed data from 11 studies (4 randomized controlled trials and 7 pre-post intervention studies) evaluating ketogenic dietary interventions, including very-low-calorie ketogenic diets and other carbohydrate-restricted approaches. Key findings: 🔹 Total testosterone decreased significantly 🔹 Sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) increased significantly 🔹 LH and the LH/FSH ratio improved 🔹 BMI, waist circumference, body fat, fasting insulin, and insulin resistance decreased 🔹 Triglycerides and total cholesterol decreased, while HDL cholesterol increased 🔹 Several studies also reported improvements in menstrual regularity, ovulation, and fertility-related outcomes Interestingly, reductions in testosterone were not explained by changes in body weight or insulin levels, raising the possibility that ketosis may influence ovarian function through additional mechanisms. While the findings are very promising, larger randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm these effects. — Maseroli E, Alfaroli C, Cirillo M, Ravelli SA, Lambrinoudaki I, Focardi M, Virgili G, Vignozzi L. Continuous glucose and ketone monitoring was recently approved by the FDA for people ages 2+ living with diabetes, an important milestone for metabolic health. The ability to see glucose and ketone dynamics continuously opens up new possibilities, particularly for people who need high-frequency information to make important health decisions. This reinforces something we’ve believed at Keto-Mojo for a long time: glucose alone doesn’t always tell the whole story. Looking at glucose alongside ketones and understanding your Glucose Ketone Index (GKI) can provide additional context about your metabolic state. Continuous and point-in-time monitoring can serve different needs. Continuous monitoring can be valuable when high-frequency tracking matters. Fingerstick blood testing provides an intentional, on-demand checkpoint when you want to understand where you are at a specific moment. We applaud the continued innovation happening in metabolic monitoring and the greater visibility it can give people into their own metabolic health. Townsend Letter explores what continuous ketone monitoring could mean: townsendletter.com/continuou… #MetabolicHealth #Ketones #Glucose #GKI #Diabetes #HealthTechnology

Can a low-carb ketogenic diet be safely used in patients with heart failure and obesity? This retrospective study followed 125 adults with heart failure, including both reduced (HFrEF) and preserved (HFpEF) ejection fraction, who adopted a ketogenic diet for at least one year in a clinical weight-loss setting. Key results: ▪️ Median weight loss: 24.7 lb (11.2 kg) over approximately two years ▪️ HF hospitalizations dropped by about 50% (rate ratio = 0.5), especially in HFpEF ▪️ HDL cholesterol increased, triglycerides decreased; LDL and total cholesterol remained stable ▪️ 45% of patients with type 2 diabetes reduced their insulin dose ▪️ No significant changes in ejection fraction, diastolic function, or mitral regurgitation ▪️ ACE inhibitor, ARB, or ARNI doses were reduced in 39% of HFrEF patients These findings suggest a ketogenic diet may be a safe, effective strategy for weight loss and metabolic improvement in patients with heart failure and obesity, while also lowering hospitalization risk. While randomized trials are needed to confirm long-term safety and benefits, these findings are encouraging. — Moseley GA, Yancy WS Jr, Westman EC, Selvaraj S, Harrington J.
