Norm Macdonald was fired from Weekend Update in 1997 after NBC executives decided he wasn’t funny. A year and a half later they asked him to host the show.
He didn’t open with gratitude or a comeback story. He opened with a logical problem:
How does someone go from “not funny enough to be allowed in the building” to “funny enough to host” in eighteen months?
The monologue that follows treats the invitation itself as the setup.

Caleb Hammer completely unloads on a Louisiana couple after learning their $100,000 household is collecting $500 a month in FOOD STAMPS.
That’s $6,000/year in TAX-FREE income.
HAMMER: “That PISSES me off.”
That $6,000 cushion is exactly what lets them blow $3,600 a year eating out.
Taxpayers cover the groceries so they can hit the restaurants.
Hammer was so disgusted he stopped talking to them and started ranting under his breath, while the couple sat frozen in stunned silence.
Maybe everyone gaming the system should have to sit across from a taxpayer and explain themselves.
Something tells me the look on Hammer’s face will haunt them the next time they eat out.
Josh Allen says he plays on an empty stomach because he throws up before games, embracing the idea that a hungry warrior fights harder
“I won’t eat till after the game. Yeah. I don’t know why. I think I do know why. It’s cuz I throw up. So, it’s like I don’t want to fill my body with something that I’m just going to throw back up anyways.”
“So, I wait till I throw up, and then I drink my caffeine drink, and I’m ready to go.”
“I’ve always kind of equated it to like a hungry warrior is going to fight harder, like a wounded dog is going to fight harder to survive.”
“And that’s kind of like the mindset I’ve taken with it. Whether that’s right or wrong, I don’t know, but I feel like it’s worked for me, and I wouldn’t advise it for anybody else.”
