Neda is twelve now, and, because she is a girl in Afghanistan, in her second year without being allowed to go to school. She learns on her own through an old phone.
Shared writing created with a Talented group of yr 6 in Tanglin School, Singapore. We invented an amazing library; it might have been a museum, gallery, dictionary or anthology. Took about 10 minutes: then they wrote their own versions creating amazing oceans, pools & books.

It's that time of year again...
Geese are flying again.
I don’t always see them
but I hear them
in the sky above our home
on the valley rim....

My elder sister worked in Selfridges many years ago and once Frank Ifield got into the lift with her. Clearly a bit narked that she didn't respond to him, he said to her, "Do you know who I am?" My sister replied, "No. What floor do you work on?"

We discuss why Varjak Paw & Tyger by @whatSFSaid are such great texts to use with children.

About 25 years ago, our key stage one school went to a training day with Pie Corbett and completely changed our practice for writing as a result. Teachers were inspired and children’s writing improved dramatically.

'Wind' by Ted Hughes:

The woods crashing through darkness, the booming hills,
Winds stampeding the fields under the window"

How aware are experts on ‘standards’ in English that what some parents do, is bring kids to shows like mine, where their kids’ minds are filled with oral expressive language and word games which they can then match with words on the page from the books they have or get later?

Non-fiction graphic novels are a wonderful way of helping children understand complex information. I've started putting together a list of my favourites to use in class. Feel free to add to the list!

I love my odd visits to the big smoke which always includes a trip to the Royal Academy for art, Fortnum and Mason to wonder at their delicatessen and teas and biscuits and then Hatchards for books. Who wants a big chocolate toad for Christmas?

Warmheartedness = happy humanity 💕💕
Warm Heartedness Is the Key - His Holiness the Dalai Lama explains that with a warm heart, everything looks more positive, while a self-centered mind sees only negativity and fear. Our intelligence needs a warm heart; without one, it can become dangerous. Video originally recorded on November 11, 2019.

It's no comfort, I'm sure, but teachers being ill at the start of holidays - all holidays but particularly the longer, summer holiday - is a worldwide and age old phenomenon. (I learnt this when researching my book on teaching and stress a quarter of a century ago.)

I have written two short articles here - the one putting the linguistic argument and the other opening up the education question. One is under the other.
